Empirical evidence shows thatventure capital funds are an effective way to fund young, high-risk firms. 384There are two angel networks based in the Waikato region:Greenfields Network. With the Waikato Innovation Park acting as the conduit,Greenfields members are interested in early stage technology and high growthventures requiring over NZ$100,000.AngelLink: initiated by WaikatoLink Ltd, the commercial arm of the University ofWaikato. A national angel investment network to back New Zealand high growthtechnology ventures, with an emphasis on life sciences, engineering andinformation and communications technology. AngelLink's formation was tofacilitate investment in early stage companies arising from Government fundedresearch and, where appropriate, from private sector opportunities.Venture capital and private equity 385 investment sectors are illustrated in figure 117.Although there do not appear to be any venture capital or private equity players basedin the Waikato region, it appears that AngelLink has attracted some investment fromthe New Zealand Venture Investment Fund (NZVIF). 386Figure 117: New Zealand venture capital and private equity investment sectors 387The New Zealand Venture Investment Fund was established by the New Zealandgovernment in 2002, to help build a vibrant venture capital market in New Zealand. It isbased in Auckland and governed by a private sector board of directors. The NewZealand Venture Investment Fund currently has $200 million of funds undermanagement. Expansion/development capital refers to the stage at which the business is establishedand requires capital for further growth and expansion. The company may requireseveral rounds of capital to achieve the milestones set out in the business plan. TheNew Zealand Superannuation Fund adopted an expansion capital strategy to targetfirms within the approximately 2500 New Zealand small and medium-sized enterpriseswith annual revenues of $10-50 million. 389 It is unknown currently whether the NewZealand Superannuation Fund has invested in any firms in the Waikato region.The New Zealand Young Company Finance Monitor records 24 deals with 10 firms inthe Waikato region from quarter 1 2006 to June 2012. All but three of these deals wentto Hamilton firms. Ten of these deals were with firms in the software sector, followed bypharmaceuticals, biotechnology and life sciences. Auckland accounted for 53 per centof the deals by value nationally from 2006 to 2012, followed by Christchurch at 10 percent and Wellington and Dunedin on 9 per cent each. Hamilton accounted for 5 percent of deals by value, behind Palmerston North on 6 per cent. 390Listing on a stock market can enable firms to raise capital by selling shares to thepublic. The New Zealand stock market is known as the NZX. There are no Waikatofirms listed on the NZX at the time of writing. The majority of listed firms are located inAuckland, with others in Wellington, Canterbury and Otago.
