Empirical evidence shows thatventure capital funds are an effective way to fund young, high-risk firms. 384There are two angel networks based in the <strong>Waikato</strong> region:Greenfields Network. With the <strong>Waikato</strong> Innovation Park acting as the conduit,Greenfields members are interested in early stage technology and high growthventures requiring over NZ$100,000.AngelLink: initiated by <strong>Waikato</strong>Link Ltd, the commercial arm of the University of<strong>Waikato</strong>. A national angel investment network to back New Zealand high growthtechnology ventures, with an emphasis on life sciences, engineering andinformation and communications technology. AngelLink's formation was tofacilitate investment in early stage companies arising from Government fundedresearch and, where appropriate, from private sector opportunities.Venture capital and private equity 385 investment sectors are illustrated in figure 117.Although there do not appear to be any venture capital or private equity players basedin the <strong>Waikato</strong> region, it appears that AngelLink has attracted some investment fromthe New Zealand Venture Investment Fund (NZVIF). 386Figure 117: New Zealand venture capital and private equity investment sectors 387The New Zealand Venture Investment Fund was established by the New Zealandgovernment in 2002, to help build a vibrant venture capital market in New Zealand. It isbased in Auckland and governed by a private sector board of directors. The NewZealand Venture Investment Fund currently has $200 million of funds undermanagement.
