electronicsB.M.S./S.M.S.Maximizingbattery lifeby monitoring. To better manage a battery (fleet),information about its use is required.Battery monitoring will:Extend battery lifeIncrease uptime, minimize downtimeReduce maintenance costsTake the guesswork out of battery problemsKeep operation & maintenance logsHelp explain why service life is less than lab lifeWe designed a small monitor that remains on the industrial batteryand builds a history to help determine how the battery is used. Thismonitoring unit, called the B.M.S., measures every aspect whichinfluences battery service life. Our units are equipped with sensors, which will check:■ Temperature■ Voltage■ Depth of discharge■ Battery balance■ Electrolyte level. What does B.M.S. do (Battery Monitoring System)?■ Records all physical & electrical parameters■ Creates logs of battery performanceHow do I read information from the unit placed on the battery? Most other systems will require a laptop or PDA to retrieve information from the unit. We have applied a different and better solution. We have developed a centrally managed database which stores battery information safely, secure, simple to download and easy toreport (see further: How does it report?). To upload the battery monitor’s memory into this database, all you need to do is plug in ourGPRS modem into the back of the B.M.S. unit for a few seconds.

electronicsB.M.S./S.M.S.Lifting your battery quality management. The B.M.S. collects important data, but it needs anengineer to physically go to the unit to download andinterpret its data.S.M.S. is identical to the B.M.S. with the additionalcapability to automatically report battery usageand life-threatening events, without any humanintervention. What does S.M.S. do (Service Management System)? The remote monitoring will:■ Record all physical & electrical parameters■ Automatically upload this info to an online database■ This database displays historical data(battery performance logs) and real-time status■ Automatically notify incorrect use, maintenance needs orbattery life-threatening eventsS.M.S. helps to:■ Avoid premature failure■ Optimize uptime increase customer satisfaction■ Decrease downtime lower costsFor battery manufacturers or suppliers, S.M.S. will:■ Increase your professionalism■ Add value to your products■ Help to create customer specific warranty & serviceagreements■ Allows Need-Based maintenance plans opposed to fixedfrequency maintenance plans■ The battery performance database can be built up in line withyour existing communication (logo, colors, …)

electronicsB.M.S./S.M.S.OPTIONS1. xMS current sensorBy connecting the sensor to the B.M.S. or S.M.S., the current in and out of the battery can bemeasured. Available in 3 versions: 200A, 400A and 800A.2. xMS I/O ModuleIn order to expand the facilities of the B.M.S., S.M.S. and charger node further a universal I/O module can be connected. This consists of 4 digital inputs and 4 outputs. The switching is encapsulated in a waterproof housing.A. Connected to the B.M.S. or S.M.S., the module offers the following facilities:Interim charge alarmWhen a battery is disconnected for reuse during charging, this damages the battery. To prevent this, the I/O module can be connected sothat it is impossible to work with the machine unless someone responsible decides otherwise and releases the function with a specific codeor key.Insufficient electrolyte alarmIf, at the end of charging, it is established that there is insufficient water in the battery, this can activate an alarm (e.g. buzzer). The next usercan replenish the water, which will stop the alarm.Deep discharge alarmAlthough almost all machines are equipped with a discharge limiter, it is generally easy to circumvent by briefly disconnecting the battery andthen reconnecting it. The machine can then often be used for another quarter of an hour, resulting in deep discharge, which leads to damageto the battery and the machine. With the I/O module, this can be made impossible by switching off the hoisting function, for example, at 80%discharge dept.Other alarmsThe inputs can be configured to register other alarms (such as shocks) via the B.M.S./S.M.S. or prompt e-mail notification.

electronicsB.M.S./S.M.S.B. Connection to the charger node enables an innovative concept where an ordinary battery becomes maintenance free.H 2 OThis system makes manual periodic battery maintenance superfluous andcuts costs.163245The major aspects are:1.2.3.4.5.6.Water can be supplied to the chargers from a mains filter or reservoir through a central pipe with branches for each charger. The charger node receives the request for water from the battery and opens the water valve (AWS-V), with the aid of the xMS I/O nodeafter the charging. The valve (AWS-V) turns on the water supply for 15 minutes, sufficient for replenishing the battery. The valve is necessary to prevent overfilling. The water supply plug is “foolproof”: simply connect like any other plug and the water supply will automatically be turned on. When the plugsare unplugged, the double valve ensures that no water can flow away. The S.M.S. module on the battery registers the electrolyte level with a probe and will manage the automatic replenishment (every 20 cycles,or more frequently is necessary). As it is therefore the battery that ‘requests’ water, it is not necessary to connect to the same charger everytime. The battery with the option of a classic water filling system ensures perfect filling. The S.M.S. modem pack and network connect all charger nodes to the Internet and the database to guard the entire system.

electronicsB.M.S./S.M.S.How does B.M.S. work? With the help of the B.M.S. modem pack, you can read out every B.M.S. on everylocation within a minute. How does S.M.S. work? The diagram shows you how battery and user information, coming from the batteries (S.M.S. unit) in the forklift trucks, is sent viaa network of chargers and a mobile phone modem over the internet to a database.Only one modem per charger room is required. This is an important cost saving compared with systems that havethe modem on the truck.Red colour : To be installed at customer’s siteCERTIFIED128-BIT SSLSECURITYENCRYPTIONGSMmodemTCP/IPGPRSINTERNETE-MAIL NOTIFICATIONSECURE PORTAL WEBSITEFOR ADMINISTRATION& REPORTING

electronicsB.M.S./S.M.S.Reporting?The information measured by the B.M.S. or S.M.S. modules is safely stored (automatically in case of S.M.S.) in a database. This can be queried for reporting through a secure and password-protected web portal. This web portal can also be used to configure e-notification: depending on the error, different people can automatically receivea detailed report by e-mail.Easy to customize colors and graphics fora perfect integration with your existingcompany website.Search function to quickly locate abatteryDatabase provides multiple “remark”fieldsNavigation tree to keep track of customers, sites, modems, and batteries
