2007 Spartans RoundupAfter earning their first bid to the NCAA Tournament inschool history, the Aurora University men’s soccer teamlooks forward to making national appearances an annualachievement. Creating an impact within the NorthernAthletics Conference (NAC) will be crucial to building theSpartans’ reputation this season. Four of the 11 teams withinthe NAC, including AU, are regionally ranked; therefore, another well-battled season will only increase awareness ofthis team’s talent and capabilities. Last season the Spartansfinished 8-1 in the opening year of the NAC and 12-5-4 overall. In his fifth season as head coach, Pete Watkins seeks toadvance even further with this group of talented young athletes. With 21 new faces outnumbering the 17 returners thisseason, Coach Watkins emphasizes the importance of“developing familiarity and cohesion” as a team.Motivated senior Andrew Taylor, a third-year captain andthree-time All-Conference defender, directs the Spartansagain this season from the sweeper position. Junior ChaseCorricelli, named to the NSCAA North Central All-Regionand NAC All-Conference teams, focuses on leading theSpartans once again in goals, scoring 12 goals and tallyingtwo assists last year. Corricelli is accompanied by NAC AllConference Senior Marshall Reed and NAC All-ConferenceHonorable Mention Senior Captain Jordan Barry. SeniorsScott Anderson, Tyler Klotz, and Phil Tedford aide theSpartans’ offense this season, and Lance Austin, JoeyCatrino, Jody Hall and Captain Jim Spann solidify thedefense with help from junior Brian Barnett. The Spartansalso return junior midfielder Ricardo Gallegos and sophomoredefender Danny Arroyo.Sophomore goalkeepers Logan Hurley and JoshCastenada will compete with incoming freshmen KevinSoderstrom, Bryce Johnson, Matt Ness and Jamie McGuirefor playing time this season. With an unavoidable demandfor a fresh face in the net, Watkins recognizes the need for agoalkeeper “to step up as a leader and take over thedefense.” These four freshmen are among the 21 new facesjoining the Spartans this season. Other newcomers includefreshmen forwards Anthony Amedei and Bobby Gonnellawho hope to accompany Corricelli, Reed, Barry, Anderson,Klotz, and Tedford in scoring this season. The Spartans also look to transfer forwards Danny Mayand Toney Howell to heighten the competitiveness amongstthe Spartans offense. May arrives at AU from Missouri StateUniversity, where he played soccer for three seasons andToney Howell transfers in from NAC rival Marian College, where he also saw playing time. Freshmen Nick Helmer,Kyle Haumersen, Jeremy Meyers, William Laud, AnthonyGutierrez and Erik Turley demonstrate potential to strengthenand give some depth to the Spartans midfield with veteranseniors Reed, Hall, and Tedford.Spartans also welcome freshmen Dan Rediger, SeanMiller and Matt Reimer to the team’s defense. SeniorsTaylor, Spann, Austin, and Catrino offer plenty of collegiateexperience and expertise in the back for these freshmen tostudy.Watkins recognizes that each individual’s ability to blendhis personal talents with one cohesive style of play willimpact the Spartan’s season profoundly. In the competitiveNAC, it is crucial for AU to function smoothly and performwell as one solid unit each and every game.AU Men’s Soccer3
