CraftTalkAestheticHandicraftIn conjunction with National CraftA Cultural HeritageDay (February 23 – March 5), theKraftangan Malaysia (Sarawak) will beunveiling a new range of local handicraftproducts based on the heritage conceptto produce a contemporary productdesign, explained Mohd. Latif bin Dirun, the Director. He goes on to say thatthe product’s Sarawak identity will bemaintained through the use of styles andmaterials unique to the State. What’smore where possible the various culturalmotifs of the different ethnic groups willbe incorporated into all the designs. Thiswill effectively give the products a trulyMalaysian feel. The abundant weaving materialsavailable in Sarawak means that theycan be utilised to produce usefulitems like baskets, bags, mats and otherlifestyle products. While Sarawak isfamed for her baskets, the Kraftanganpeople have taken a keen interest in themaking of the Malay mats locally knownas tikar bergerang (double plaiting mat).At least 8 strips of pandanas leaf are usedin the making of this type of mat. In fact‘bergerang’ refers to the ‘3 dimensionalpattern’ plaiting technique. The essential part of bergerang is the“calculated procedures” used to createpatterns or motifs and the fitness(precision) of the plaited materials (strips). The tikar bergerang has a unique‘usage expression’ and has its own4 KuchingTalkJan-Mar2007

‘iconographical value’ for the Malaycommunity. Its original function was asa prayer mat for the Muslims. Thus it isconceptually related to values of a cleanand sacred item, and so its usage andintuitive value from within, said MohdLatif during a paper presentation at theInternational World Eco Fibre and TextileForum in Kuching on May 2006.Kraftangan have taken this a stepfurther. The basic 100-year old intricateweaving technique has not changed. What have changed are the uses of thecolourful mat. It is now made into seatcovers, table top covers and screendividers.Sarawak’s name is synonymous withquality pottery. The pottery that touristusually see are made and designed bythe Chinese using modern methods. What is not so commonly seen howeveris the old-fashioned style pottery madeby the Iban, Kelabit and Lun Bawangtribes. The Ibans of Nanga Sumpalonghouse are renowned for their Nuanpottery. The Kelabits of Bario and theLun Bawang in Lawas and Ba’kalalan areexperts in making the Kudin or Tuningtype of pottery.Keringkam are scarves lavishlyembroidered in gold and silver threadworn by Malay women. As far back as1840, a historian noted that thekeringkam was used during publicoccasions and weddings. Today it stilladorns the heads and shoulders of Malaywomen. However the keringkam hasundergone a modern transformationand can now be used as place mats, napkins and table runners. Toughermaterials like cotton linen have replacedthe more delicate fabrics and also lessembroidery is used. The mere mention of pua kumbu bringsSarawak yet again to mind. This handwovenwarp ikat textile represents thequintessence of Iban culture. Theirlifestyle, values and beliefs which arerepresented in the patterns are intricatelywoven into the cloth. It is used by theIban for many of their rituals. Nowadaysthe pua kumbu is not only woven assarongs, but also used as carpets andwall decorations. At Kraftangan, theyhave transformed it into householdaccessories like cushion covers, tablerunners and place mats. Taking astep further products are also createdCraftTalkthrough techniques of combiningpua weaving and batik waxing toachieve a modern outlook wherevibrant colours and beads are usedto enhance it.What the people at Kraftangan havedone is to give the local handicraftindustry a boost by using innovativedesign and modern methodswhile still retaining its heritageconcept. What that means is thatthe tourist is ensured of valueadded products to take homewith them. Whatever your tastein handicraft, be it potteryor textile, the people atKraftangan will havesomething truly Malaysianthat promises to appeaseyou. Thetime too is flexible, it starts from 1 pm on Saturday to 2 pm on Sunday; it isvirtually a 24-hour market! It is especially busy during Saturday evening andearly Sunday morning when crowds throng the spaces in between these stallssearching for things that they need. Many others also go to the market forcuriosity, wanting to seek out some unusual food or among the tourists to thecity, just to sample the market’s wide variety of offerings. For further information, please contact:Kuching North City Council (DBKU)Enforcement Division (Licensing Unit)Bangunan Al-Idrus, Commercial Centre, JalanSatok, 93400 Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia.Tel: 6 082 234654 Fax: 6 082 239853Website: www.dbku.gov.myMaking a trip to the colourful Satok market is simple, it is near to most majorhotels in the city and just a little outside the city center. Taxis and buses passthe area frequently but parking during peak hours can be a headache. Opt forsuitable clothing and the right footwear if you are planning for an extendedwalk around and pay special attention to your pockets and handbags aspickpockets and others looking for easy pickings might be in the crowdedmarket. For those with lots of time to spare, it is always interesting to movearound the different parts of the market, sipping fresh coconut or sugar canejuice along the way.28 KuchingTalkJan-Mar2007

Shoppers’TalkFAMA Open SupermarketTourists visiting Kuching will notice that the locals enjoy shopping atnumerous ‘open air’ markets throughout the city to purchase variousagricultural products and all types of meats and fish. However none is moreeye-catching than the green and white umbrella-covered Pasar Tani or FarmersMarket. Managed by FAMA (Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority), these ‘openair’ markets were created to meet the ever increasing demand for local produce inthe country.PASAR TANIAROUND KUCHINGSukmaria Parking AreaFriday: 2.00 pm – 9.00 pmSaturday: 7.00 am – 3.00 pmTabuan Laru Parking AreaSaturday: 6.00 am – 1.00 pmSunday: 6.00 am – 1.00 pmPasar Matang Jaya Parking AreaSaturday: 6.00 am – 6.00 pmSunday: 6.00 am – 1.00 pmBako Bus Station Parking AreaSaturday: 6.00 am – 6.00 pmSunday: 6.00 am – 6.00 pmBandar Baru Kota SamarahanParking AreaFriday: 2.00 pm – 10.00 pmSaturday: 6.00 pm – 10.00 pmSunday: 6.00 am – 2.00 pmMoreover, FAMA is the lead marketing agency for the Ministry of Agriculture andAgro-based Industry, and, it is responsible in developing the market, of which theagriculture sector is acknowledged as the 3rd engine growth of Malaysia. With thegovernment working hand-in-hand with the farmer and the seller, the public andtourist alike is assured of a wide selection of top quality agro-based products. Thephenomenal growth of the Pasar Tani throughout the country has shown thatpeople have taken extremely well to it. In fact the ‘open air’ market is reflective ofa truly Malaysian way of shopping. The newly introduced Pasar Tani Mega was established to meet the public’sincreasing demand for more local products. In this “open supermarket” concept, every sort of agriculture product is sold. What’s more numerous Pasarina have beenset up within it to sell non agro-based products like clothing and accessories. Suchdiversity helps stimulate the Farmers Market after more than twenty years ofoperation. In keeping with the changing times, large maroon canopies shade theproduce and foldable racks are used to display fruits and vegetables.Currently, nine Farmers Market are in operation in Sarawak, with Bekenu being thenewest addition in May of this year. With the continued growth of the agro-basedindustry, consumer demand for a continuous supply of fresh and wholesomeproducts will be met, and in doing so there will be a rapid rise in the growth of PasarTani Mega in the future to meet such a demand. This harbours well for FAMA interms of setting up more Farmers’ Market via its “open supermarket” concept. Sonow the secret is out and tourists know why locals like shopping outdoors, and theytoo can join in to get the freshest and choicest local produce available in the city. For further information, please contact:FEDERAL AGRICULTURAL MARKETING AUTHORITY (FAMA)Lot 6C, D, E, Wisma Haji Suaidi, Jalan Tun Abdul Rahman Ya’kub, Petra Jaya, 93050 Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia.Tel: 6 082 422 578 / 414 744 | Fax: 6 082 244 551 | www.famaxchange.orgJan-Mar2007KuchingTalk 29

PlacesOfWorshipTHEINDIANMOSQUEMasjid Bandar Kuching or Masjid India(Indian Mosque), as it is better knownas, is the oldest mosque in Sarawak. Itwas built in 1837 by Indian Muslims whooriginated from southern India. Originallythe walls and roof were made of nipahpalms. In 1887, belian (ironwood) planksreplaced them and later the floor wascemented. Today, if you see it from acrossGambier Street, all you will notice is thesignage, and one could be forgiven inthinking it were just another shop houseand not the main entrance to a mosque. The unique thing about this mosqueis that all 16,000 square feet of it issandwiched between shops thatwere built around it over time. It canbe accessed from the textile shops ofIndia Street, but one has to traipsethrough a narrow lane, which is also ashort-cut to Gambier Street, wherearomatic spices on sale will greet thevisitor. Though the name of themosque was changed to Masjid BandarKuching in the Sixties, it is still knownas Masjid India because in the oldendays it was mainly the Indian Muslimswho prayed there.Since it is situated in the heart of thecity, it is a convenient place for Muslimsin the area and shoppers to worshipat. When the ‘bedok” or drum issounded to mark the time for prayers, usually around 400 faithful gather, butfor the observance of Friday noontimeprayers, the congregation can swell upto 1,500. The mosque also started thefirst religious school in Sarawak inthe Forties. What’s more, as was thetradition that dates back to its inception, the mosque continues to provideshelter for tired travellers. There is an old Chinese temple right in the centre ofancient Carpenter street, fondly called San Ti temple.Artistically decorated with mythical figurines andbeautifully created walls, this more than 150 year oldtemple is open to the public the whole year round.Managed by the Teochew association of Kuching, thetemple has three major celebrations when processionsand shows are held. The main one is held at the end ofthe Lunar calendar year involving a street processionwhile the other two dates on the same calendar yearare on the third and ninth month respectively when stageshows are held. Check out these events when in Kuchingand experience the cultural and religious celebrationsof the Chinese community here.THE SAN TI TEMPLETHE KUCHING SIKH TEMPLERight in the heart of the City, theKuching Sikh Temple is a four-storeywhitish building with beautiful smalldomes on the top. The entrance isalways wide open, infact, it is openeddaily from 5am to about 7pm everyday!Worshippers usually attend the religiousceremony of prayer on Sundaymornings in the second floor hallwhere more than 300 faithful can praytogether at any one time.
