General information
The region is situated in the eastern part of
Slovakia. It borders the regions of Kosice,
Zilina, and Banska Bystrica, as well as the
countries of Poland and the Ukraine. The
Presov region is the most populated and
one of the largest in the country. The
region has a hilly terrain. The western part
contains Slovakia’s most well-known
Levoca
mountains. The High Tatras. Water comes
from the rivers of Poprad and Topla as
well as dams of which Domasa is the
largest one. It is also the most important
recreational areas of the region. Non-metallic
ores and salt are the most important
mineral deposits in the region. Other
materials for construction are gravel, sand,
and different types of clay.

Economy
Agriculture and a diversified industrial
base provide the economic basis for the
region. For example, a list of the companies

region reached 5,413 million SKK as of
31 December 2000 (the eighth place
ranking among all eight Slovak regions).
By June 2002 FDI had reached 5,497
million SKK.

The region is connected to surrounding
areas with a transportation network
comprised mainly of roads and railways.
International routes: Poland – Plavec
– Kysak (offers a connection to the Kosice
– Bohumin route) – Kosice – Hungary
and Presov – Kapusany – Strazske.

PRESOV
Presov lies in a central part of Eastern
Slovakia, in a northern part of Kosice area.
It has a good location on the road system
going from west to east and from north to
south. International road and railroad
routes go through the city to Poland and
Ukraine.
The city is a seat of district and regional
administrative bodies and an administrative
centre of a newly established Presov,
the largest in Slovakia. The area of the city
has 7,118 hectares, from which 36% is
agricultural land, 36% are forests, and
28% is an urban area. The historical centre
of the city lies 255 metres above sea level.

machinery and electro-technical (30%),
food (18%), wood-processing, textile
and clothing (10%). A high level of
unemployment stems from a decline in
industrial production and therefore not
enough jobs.

are provided for the whole district. There
are medical specialties for the whole
region while 291 private doctors provide

Industrial park Presov
In its development plan, the city of Presov
has an allocated area of 200 ha that is
assigned for the park. It also has a feasibility
study for that area. It will be a green
field industrial park.
Paperwork for its first stage (app. 50 ha)
is under evaluation process to obtain a
use land permit with a designed technical
infrastructure. The city prepared contracts
on future contracts for current land
owners with whom it negotiates land
purchase. The city is a founder of the park.

STROPKOV
A district city lies on a junction of road
II/575 (direction Medzilaborce and
Lupkava valley and II/557 leading
a north-south direction. It is connected
to I/73 and E371 leading to a border
point in Vysny Komarnik.

PRESOV REGION
POPRAD
The city is an administrative, industrial
and cultural centre of the region under
the High Tatras. Good geographical
location and good traffic connection
(it is an important junction of road and
railway routes) offers entry to four
national parks – the High Tatras National
Park. The Low Tatras National Park,
Pieniny National Park, and the Slovak
Paradise. Because it lies nearby the High
Tatras, it is called “the High Tatras Gate”.
Currently it is a city with developing
economic potential. The headquarters
of several companies, banks, district
and regional institutions, and hotels are
located there.
Geographical and climate conditions
create good conditions for sport
activities, and this was the reason why
the city organised several sport events
on a national and international levels.
The city organised IV. European Youth
Olympic Days, World Winter University
Championship, and World Championship
in motocycling. The city was
a candidate for Winter Olympic Games
2002 and 2006 that made it worldwide
famous.

SNINA
In the past, the city was lying on an important
trade route from Hungary to Halic.
This route was known as Porta Rustica
– Russian Route. Snina is located in the
most eastern edge of Slovakia. The city
lies in the valley of the Ciroha river, on
its junction with the Pcolina river. It is
surrounded with Vihorlat Mountains,
Bukovske Mountains, and Low Beskyds.
Its elevation is 216 m above sea level.
It offers entry into the National Park

Industrial park Snina
An industrial zone of the city of Snina
that is included in the city development
plan is located in the area of Vihorlat
company. Size of the area is 3.8 ha,
however, the city does not own the
land but currently works on obtaining
ownership to it. The city together with
other potential investors plans to allocate
another area of a similar size for future
investments.
The allocated area does not have any
fixed assets or infrastructure despite the
fact that it is a part of Vihorlat private
company. The area has connection to
railway tracks.
There are following connections to the
transport network:
• Roads – state road No. 74 from
Humenne do Ubla (direction to the
Ukraine)
• Railways – Humenne – Snina – Stakcin,
with connection to:

The city is located in the northwest edge
of the East Slovak Lowlands, in the region

complete infrastructure, pedestrian zones

state roads, sufficiency of parking space

BARDEJOV
The city is an important historical and spa
centre located in northeastern Slovakia.
It is spread on both banks of the Topla
river with borders close to Poland. The
city is the centre of the Bardejov district.
It location allows for a good border-
-crossing cooperation with the Ukraine,
Poland, and Belarus. The connection with
Poland is made by 60-km long north
border and three border check-points.

The city of Humenne is a centre of the
Upper Zemplin. Its elevation is 157 m

• The city and the Government of the
United States signed the Memorandum
on Understanding with the aim to realise
a project of strategic plan for development
of the local economy. The strategic
process will be supervised by representatives
of the US Embassy, Agency USAID,
and consultants from the Czech-American
consulting company Berman Group.

Industrial Park Humenne
– Gutmanovo
A feasibility study of the industrial park for
issuance of a land use permit was based on
the study of experts from PE International
Consultants l.t.d. called “Technological park
Humenne – Gurmanovo”. It was also based
on a project form dated August 2000 as well
as consultations with city representatives,
EU commissioners, and a group appointed
by the mayor of Humenne.
Location of the industrial park
The industrial park is located in Humenne,
in the industrial zone of Gutmanovo that is
on the left side of Polna street, behind
railway tracks leading to a water treatment
facility. The park neighbours the area of
Chemes company. Its southern part is on
a boundary of a proposed protected area
for traffic circumvention of Humenne. Its
northern part is made by railway tracks of
Chemes. There is a private property
between the access road to the park and
Polna street that is not included in the park
area. Entry to the park will be from Polna
street after its reconstruction to meet
a required width. The whole park area
is located on a green field, specifically on
agricultural land that will be owned by
the city of Humenne after purchasing from
private owners.
