<strong>Minutes</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>Board</strong> <strong>Meeting</strong> – <strong>June</strong> 6, <strong>2011</strong> -3-Mrs. Bernstein stated it was also great to visit the 4 th grade class that had 33 babyquails that had recently hatched. She stated it was amazing to hear the studentsdiscuss the hatching process and answer various questions regarding the baby quail.They thanked Ms. Miller and the staff at Pasadena E.S.Mr. Cepeda stated that he had the pleasure <strong>of</strong> presenting XXXXXXX XXXXXX an awardfor achieving ―Eagle‖ status within the Boy Scout organization. This is a very highhonor. He congratulated XXXXXXX and his family.Mr. Bettan stated he attended the DECA Award Ceremony. DECA is one <strong>of</strong> manythings available to our students. It was wonderful to see so many children involved.Mr. Bettan attended Mattlin Pride Day. It was a great event.Superintendent’s AnnouncementsMr. Dempsey discussed possible changes in the starting times <strong>of</strong> our schools. MattlinMiddle <strong>School</strong> has no zero period. Parents and PTA have asked us to look at this.Cost was a factor. The transportation director prepared a proposal to change thestarting time <strong>of</strong> some schools. We are sharing information. We are not talking aboutSeptember <strong>2011</strong>. We might be considering September 2012. The proposal wouldcause the K-Center to start earlier and the high school to start later. It is a trial balloondiscussion.Mr. Dempsey spoke <strong>of</strong> the Senior Awards Ceremony on <strong>June</strong> 13 and the manyscholarships being awarded that evening. He also discussed the moving upceremonies that begin on <strong>June</strong> 15 at the Kindergarten Center and end on <strong>June</strong> 26 atthe high school graduation.Ms. Gierasch was pleased to state that Tracey Gonzalez is a recipient <strong>of</strong> the <strong>2011</strong>Educator <strong>of</strong> Excellence Award. She was selected by New York State’s most prestigiousorganization for English teachers, the New York State English Council.Ms. Gierasch was very proud to announce that XXXXXX XXXXXXXX, a sophomoreresearch student is one <strong>of</strong> ten students nationally who was awarded a Samsung <strong>2011</strong>Scholarship. She will be awarded a $1,000 prize. Ms. Gierasch congratulated Ameliaand Ms. O’Donnell.Mr. Dempsey stated that Relay for Life will be held this weekend. This is truly acommunity event. He also noted that at our next <strong>Board</strong> meeting we will be presentingstudent awards. It will be held at the high school and the meeting will start at 7:00 p.m.

FinanceMr. Ruf discussed the tax cap. He stated it is a game changer. It takes awaylocal control. It impacts quickly. If the tax cap were in place this year, the budget wouldbe reduced by 1.5 million. The public would no longer vote on a budget. They wouldvote on a tax. There would be limited exemptions: 1) capital expenditures, 2) tortjudgments 3) additions to the tax base. Mr. Ruf stated that unfortunately pension costsare not a real exemption. There is no mention <strong>of</strong> mandate relief. He stronglyencourages people to get in touch with their representatives.Mr. Jonas discussed the impact <strong>of</strong> the loss <strong>of</strong> ARRA funding.


<strong>Minutes</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>Board</strong> <strong>Meeting</strong> – <strong>June</strong> 6, <strong>2011</strong> -6-<strong>School</strong> ClimateMr. Dempsey discussed what was done regarding the <strong>Board</strong>’s goal on school climate.He stated we selected and began conducting a school climate survey.Mrs. Schulman encouraged parents to fill out the school climate survey.Mr. Dempsey stated we created an anti-bullying and cyber-bullying policy in accordancewith the Dignity For All Students Act. He noted that the State Senate is consideringamending the law to change the name <strong>of</strong> the law as well as other amendments. Mr.Dempsey stated we created a dignity For All Students Task Force.Ms. Gierasch discussed what was done in house on school climate.Academic StandardsMs. Gierasch stated we wanted to evaluate our K-8 curriculum to determine whatchanges needed to be made. This expanded to K-12. She discussed what was done inelementary English. She discussed summer workshop presentations with necessarycomponents for successful writing. She reviewed writing units <strong>of</strong> study for grade 3, 5and 6 next year. Ms. Gierasch discussed Fundations, social studies curriculum andRead Aloud. Ms. Gierasch stated that in the middle school level, we brought in aconsultant to explore best practices. We will be implementing a writing program. Ms.Gierasch discussed what was done in high school reading, math, social studies, scienceand ELA.Ms. Gierasch reviewed student performance data and how we are adjusting programsto meet our expectations. She spoke <strong>of</strong> the enhanced curriculum for all specialeducation students other than those working toward the IEP diploma. She alsodiscussed the new Common Core requirements.Discussion:Mr. Dempsey stated this is a status report.Mrs. Schulman asked if Read About is being utilized.Ms. Gierasch stated that teachers are familiar with Read 180. They are not familiar withRead About. We have to bring our teachers up to speed.

It was very nice to see that our students are so capable.Mrs. Pierno asked if we could form an academic standards committee.Mr. Dempsey responded.Mrs. Pierno noted that we own licenses for math computer programs. Have we done ananalysis <strong>of</strong> this.Ms. Gierasch stated ―not yet‖. We have to revisit some <strong>of</strong> the math components.Mr. Bettan stated he is concerned about the pendulum swinging toward standardizedtesting. We have to look collectively at this as a district.Ms. Gierasch stated that we have to provide teachers with a rich curriculum.2. Guidance UpdateMs. Lynn spoke <strong>of</strong> the 8 th grade transition plan. She reviewed the three prongapproach. She told <strong>of</strong> the 150 students who were trained to be mentors. Shediscussed scheduling and the visibility <strong>of</strong> counselors. Next year we will have atransition to electronic submission <strong>of</strong> documents to colleges. This represents a bigchange.Ms. Lynn stated that with the addition <strong>of</strong> the new counselor the caseloads will nowaverage 200 students, down from 225. Students and parents will have more time tomeet with the councelors. There will be a formal 9 th grade meeting for every student.The additional counselor allows more flexibility for the department to explore additionalprogramming ideas. She stated each counselor has a liaison responsibility.Discussion:Mrs. Schulman stated that transistion can be very tough for special ed student.

She requested an update nextwinter. She asked what would be covered at the 9 th grade meeting with students andparents.Ms. Lynn responded. Most important is that parents meet counselors.Mr. Cepeda expressed his views that he would like to see our students continue tochallenge themselves. Having a strong guidance department is critical to making thathappen. He thanked Ms. Lynn.3. RCT Safety Net ChangesMs. Gierasch stated that the option to take RCTs will no longer be available for anystudent entering Grade 9 beginning in September <strong>2011</strong>. She reviewed therequirements for a local diploma for all students with disabilities. She reviewed therequirements to appeal if a students fails a required RegentsPublic ParticipationTracy Minaman spoke <strong>of</strong> an e-mail she received from PTA regarding starting times <strong>of</strong>schools and trimester report cards. She is against starting the K-Center earlier than itstarts now. Children <strong>of</strong> working parents would have to be in child care longer. She alsodoes not want to wait until December to meet with the teachers. She asked that the<strong>Board</strong> consider having the first quarter reflect a social grade and the other threequarters reflect academics.
