IntroductionMesotrioneInhibits a precursor to plastoquinoneResults in decreased carotenoid productionVisual symptoms including bleaching followed by plantnecrosis

IntroductionReported to have activity onLarge crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis)Smooth crabgrass (Digitaria ischaemum)Henbit (Lamium amplexicaule)Broadleaf plantain (Plantego major)Yellow woodsorrel (Oxalis stricta)Nimblewill (Muhlenbergia schreberi)Has applications in cool- and warm-season turfgrass

IntroductionResearch trials were initiated to determine:Annual grass controlSmooth crabgrass (Digitaria ischaemum)Goosegrass (Eleusine indica)Turfgrass toleranceEstablished tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea)At spring or fall seeding

Summary Applied preemergent, mesotrione (0.31 or 0.62 lb ai/a) did not offer smoothcrabgrass control as control was

SummaryWith pre- and postemergent combinations, mesotrione .31 fb .31 provided 78 and 76%crabgrass control, respectively, late Augustand late September. .31 fb .62 provided 94 and86% control, while .62 fb .62 provided 94 and89% control respectively, late August and lateSeptember.

SummarySingle preemergent applications of mesotrioneoffered

SummarySingle postemergent applications ofmesotrione (0.33 or 0.5 lb ai) provided 96 and91% goosegrass control late August, respectively while control was reduced to 78and 80% by late September.

All trts included NIS.

SummaryMesotrione (0.19 or 0.25 lb ai/a) applied earlypostemergent (2 leaf goosegrass) provided 58and 69% control mid-September, respectively.Mesotrione was not effective in controllingmature goosegrass (5 leaf & 2 tillerapplications)

Tolerance TrialsResearch trials were initiated to determine theeffect of mesotrione applications:At spring and fall seeding of tall fescue0.15 – 0.5 lb ai/a mesotrioneapplied at seeding and six weeks after seedingEstablished tall fescue0.125 – 0.5 lb ai/a mesotrioneapplied initially and six weeks after initial treatment

Tolerance TrialsMesotrione applied at spring or fall seeding orto established tall fescue, reductions in tallfescue establishment, phytotoxicity, or turfquality reductions were not objectionable atany time throughout the trial.

ConclusionsSingle preemergent applications of mesotrione did notprovide season long smooth crabgrass or goosegrasscontrol, although postemergent applications (0.31 lbai/a) provided fair to good smooth crabgrass orgoosegrass control.Additionally, with pre- and postemergentcombinations, mesotrione provided fair to goodsmooth crabgrass or goosegrass control.

ConclusionsMesotrione was not effective in controllingmature goosegrass.Tall fescue exhibited tolerance to mesotrioneapplied at spring or fall seeding or afterestablishment
