See over for details.Role of <strong>Specialty</strong> <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>Exam<strong>in</strong>ation</strong>sThe <strong>Specialty</strong> <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>Exam<strong>in</strong>ation</strong> <strong>in</strong> Endocr<strong>in</strong>ology <strong>and</strong> <strong>Diabetes</strong>was developed by the Federation <strong>in</strong> collaboration with the Society forEndocr<strong>in</strong>ology, the Association of British Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Diabetologists <strong>and</strong><strong>Diabetes</strong> UK.The <strong>Specialty</strong> <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>Exam<strong>in</strong>ation</strong>s play an essential role <strong>in</strong> the overalleducational experience <strong>and</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g professional development oftra<strong>in</strong>ees <strong>in</strong> the United K<strong>in</strong>gdom. They also provide a professional st<strong>and</strong>ardaga<strong>in</strong>st which physicians work<strong>in</strong>g outside the United K<strong>in</strong>gdom can measuretheir level of atta<strong>in</strong>ment. The aim of the <strong>Specialty</strong> <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>Exam<strong>in</strong>ation</strong>s is to identify thosewho, hav<strong>in</strong>g undertaken a period of specialty tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, have acquired thenecessary professional knowledge <strong>and</strong> problem-solv<strong>in</strong>g skills essentialfor <strong>in</strong>dependent specialist practice. However, success <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Specialty</strong><strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>Exam<strong>in</strong>ation</strong> alone is not a sufficient requirement for specialistregistration; the <strong>Specialty</strong> <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>Exam<strong>in</strong>ation</strong>s are <strong>in</strong>tended tocomplement workplace-based assessments of professional competence.EligibilityAll UK <strong>and</strong> overseas tra<strong>in</strong>ees who have obta<strong>in</strong>ed MRCP(UK) are eligible totake a <strong>Specialty</strong> <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>Exam<strong>in</strong>ation</strong>. UK tra<strong>in</strong>ees who are <strong>in</strong> a specialtytra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g post but do not hold the MRCP(UK) are also eligible.FormatThe <strong>Specialty</strong> <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>Exam<strong>in</strong>ation</strong>s follow the MRCP(UK) exam<strong>in</strong>ationformat, compris<strong>in</strong>g two 3-hour papers each conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g 100 ‘best-of-fivequestions’, <strong>and</strong> are conducted as computer-based tests (CBT). Each<strong>Specialty</strong> <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>Exam<strong>in</strong>ation</strong> is held once each year, <strong>in</strong> several centresthroughout the UK <strong>and</strong> overseas.<strong>Certificate</strong>C<strong>and</strong>idates who pass the exam<strong>in</strong>ation will be awarded a ‘<strong>Certificate</strong>’ <strong>in</strong>Endocr<strong>in</strong>ology <strong>and</strong> <strong>Diabetes</strong>.
