They also provide a professional standardagainst which physicians working outside the United Kingdom can measuretheir level of attainment. The aim of the Specialty Certificate Examinations is to identify thosewho, having undertaken a period of specialty training, have acquired thenecessary professional knowledge and problem-solving skills essentialfor independent specialist practice. However, success in the SpecialtyCertificate Examination alone is not a sufficient requirement for specialistregistration; the Specialty Certificate Examinations are intended tocomplement workplace-based assessments of professional competence.EligibilityAll UK and overseas trainees who have obtained MRCP(UK) are eligible totake a Specialty Certificate Examination. UK trainees who are in a specialtytraining post but do not hold the MRCP(UK) are also eligible.FormatThe Specialty Certificate Examinations follow the MRCP(UK) examinationformat, comprising two 3-hour papers each containing 100 ‘best-of-fivequestions’, and are conducted as computer-based tests (CBT). EachSpecialty Certificate Examination is held once each year, in several centresthroughout the UK and overseas.CertificateCandidates who pass the examination will be awarded a ‘Certificate’ inEndocrinology and Diabetes.
