The Scam
Have you been emailed by someone from Nigeria who wants to share
millions of dollars with you? I get such emails every month. Usually I
hit the delete key pretty quickly, but recently I decided to stick my foot
into that murky pond, and I responded to the email. Here, for your
entertainment and enlightenment, is the correspondence.
Dear Rasmussen
I am Barrister Donald Mark Solicitor. I am the Personal
attorney to Mr Rasmussen Binzagr a national of your country, who used
to work with shell development company in Nigeria.On the 21st of April
1999, my client, his wife And their three children were involved in a
car accident along Sagbama Express Road. All occupants of the vehicle
unfortunately lost there lives. Since then I have made several
enquiries to your embassy to locate any of my clients extended
relatives, this has also proved unsuccessful.After these several
unsuccessful attempts, I decided to trace his relatives over the
Internet, to locate any member of his family but of no avail, hence I
contacted you. I have contacted you to assist in repartrating the money
and property left behind by my client before they get confisicated or
declared unserviceable by the bank where this huge deposits were
lodged.

Thank you for your understanding. I don't mean to quibble, but I just
don't think my nephew would have wanted me to settle for less.
One more thing - You said 5% for taxes. I wish! You must not be very
familiar with the tax structure here in the United States, because it
is nowhere near 5%. I have never been rich before, so I am not sure,
but I think the tax rate might be pretty close to 40%! That only leaves
60% for you and me to split (50/50). Will that be OK with you?
P.S. Around the oak supper table I shared this news with my family. My
wife is very excited, but my 3 kids are a bit tore up. I explained to
them that Binzagr was a bit of a roamer, and that was why he was in
Nigeria. I was wondering if I could ask a favor of you? Actually, I am
willing to pay for your services. Here is the deal: Could you arrange
for 5 small crosses and wreaths to be placed at the spot on the Sagbama
Express Road where Binzagr, his wife and his 3 kids had their terrible
accident? It would mean alot to my kids. They are kind of upset, and
this would make them feel better. I think it kind of spooked them that
Binzagr had three kids and WE have 3 kids.
Anyway, I would fully expect this expense to be deducted from my share,
and as Binzagr's personal barrister, I expect you would know how to get

Binzagr was not really my nephew, but that because of his similar name
I have an opportunity now to keep some of his money "in the family" (of
Rasmussens)?

Great! I am glad we are on the same page. My wife is really getting
excited thinking about what she wants to do with the money. My kids are
still kind of tore up about what happened to Binzagr's kids, but I
think they'll get over it. It would really help if you could arrange
for those five crosses and wreaths to be placed at the site of the
crash on the Sagbama Express Road. Once again, I am perfectly happy
having the full cost of this memorial come out of my 50% of the money.

message". Naturally, I hung up right away. What gives? Do I have to
dial some prefix number before dialing you?
You keep asking for my fax number. As you may remember, I don't have a
fax machine. Do I need to get one? I think I could get one down at
Staples for about $100 or so. Does it need to have any particular
features? Should I just go ahead and get a fax machine, and if I do,
will I be able to charge this to expenses (remember, we split 50-50
AFTER expenses and taxes). If I do, how will you know when my fax
machine is hooked up and when my phone is?

My wife wants to know if we are going to need to come to Nigeria to get
the money or not. She is kind of hoping not, partly because of an
article in the local newspaper this morning that talked about how some
guy in Nigeria was sentenced to a stoning (and I'll bet we aren't
talking about blowing smoke in his face, are we) because he fooled
around with a woman that was not his wife. Any way, she is kind of
worried about this. I'm not though. I think I would enjoy the trip, and
I'm sure I could curtail my "urges" (if you know what I mean) for a

Dear Mark,
I’ve done it! I went to Staples and got a fax machine, and I finally
got the sucker set up! I’ll tell you, it wasn’t easy! Between unpacking
it and reading the manual, I probably spent most of the day working on
it. My wife wanted to go for a drive in the country today, and I had to
tell her what I was doing. She wasn’t happy when she found out that I
got a Staples credit card and put the thing on that. She is trying to
cut down on our credit card use, but I got to tell you, I probably get
a new credit card offered to me every day. It’s like the highlight of
the evening mail.
Anyway, I got the Brother PPF 2800. It cost $279.98. Now before you
blow a gasket, let me say that I didn’t really trust any of the other
fax machines they had. They looked like they probably were made in
Japan, and around here that is sort of frowned on. Also, let me get
this out front, the clerk convinced me that I should also get the
gray finish mobile fax machine stand, for another $207.23. I guess what
I am trying to say is this – is it OK if I count the gray finish mobile
stand as an expense as well as the fax machine? I really didn’t have a
good place to put it . . .
Anyway, I’ve got the fax machine set up now, so go ahead and fax away.
I have had it set up for about an hour now, and I haven’t got any faxes
yet, but it did ring once. So here is my number: 828 438-9488. I
don’t know what prefix code you need to dial, but maybe someone in your
law firm knows. Surely someone there has done business with someone in
the USA before.

Rest assured, I have been praying for you every day, although I won't
be able to pray for you non-stop until you get back from court because
I have a job I have to go to. And it is not one of those jobs where you
can put your mind on auto-drive either. I work in the evisceration room
at the Chicken Plant, and if my mind wanders I lose a finger (happened
once!).
Speaking of praying, once again last night when I put my kids to bed
they prayed for Binzagr's family to go to heaven. I don't know what
religion you are, but here in the USA most of us are Baptists, and
Baptists believe pretty strongly that if you don't put a cross and a
wreath at the scene of the accident the victims kind of have to hang
around heaven's waiting room. It would REALLY mean a lot to my kids
(and therefore to me) if you could PLEASE arrange for five wreaths and
crosses to be placed at the scene of the wreck. Unless I am mistaken, I
have already asked you about this several times only to have you ignore
me. Since I am willing to pay for this, this doesn't seem like the
behavior of a lawyer. Can't you help me out here?
One more thing. I assume when the court gives you our money it will be
in the form of a check. Will you be able to cash the check without my

I am having a little trouble raising the money. Normally it would not
be a problem coming up with $1000 on relatively short notice. In fact,
I did it just a couple of months ago when Uncle Lester needed six
hundred for the bail-bondsman (a little misunderstanding about a fire
someone set in his ex-wife's Camaro). I was really hoping that Agassi
would beat Sampras in yesterday's US Open final match, but he didn't.
Each time I place a bet and don't win it I have to find a new bookie,
and in this part of the country bookies don't grow on trees (this isn't

So anyway, bear with me. I called in sick at the Chicken plant, and I'm

Hi Donald. Well, yesterday was a long day, and only now (10:30 am) have
I finally got some coffee in me. Laura Mae (my wife) called me in sick
to the Chicken Plant this morning.
To make a long story short, I raised most of the thousand I need. I
found Booger and got the $75 he owed me for the tiller, and I tracked
down Bobbie Joe at the Garage and got $300 of the $500 he still owes me
for the Jet Ski (his boss advanced it to him just to get me out of his
Garage). I couldn't find Leroy. I checked all the corners where he
usually hangs. I located my sister Sally, but I couldn't shake a dime
out of her, cuz her husband Luke was there. After a while Luke took me
down to the Suds & Suds where we did a load of laundry and got a little
loaded ourselves. I sort of spilled the beans on the Binzagr deal, but
it turned out for the best because Luke wants to be dealt in. We
finally settled on him putting in $600 in exchange for getting 6
million of my money. Now here is the important thing: I told him I had
to send you $1200 and that I was going to be getting 12 million after
we split it (AFTER expenses). So he thinks he is putting up half the
money and getting half the package, but you and I know that I'm sort of
scamming him here, cuz I only have to send you one thousand not $1200,
and I sure hope to be getting more than 12 million. So can you sort of
play along with me on this one, I mean, if it comes to meeting Luke or
anything?
Luke is going to bring his $600 over tonight, so it doesn't look like I
will be able to send the money by Western Union until tomorrow. Will
that be OK?

OK! I did it! I filled out the email form you sent me and I sent it off
to the Apex Bank in Lagos. Are they going to use this information so
they can deposit money in my account? If they are going to be able to

transfer the money to me this way, how come I had to get the fax
machine?
Mainly what I want to know is when is this money transfer going to
happen? I'll admit it - I'm getting kind of anxious. Part of the reason
is a phone call I got about an hour ago from Ernie down at the Chicken
plant. He said he thought I ought to know that if I miss one more day
of work I'm going to be let go. He acted real concerned, but I'm here
to tell you, if I was let go he would be the first to grab my locker.
Another part of the reason is that I am sort of having to stay away
from a couple of guys in town who I owe money to, and it would be real
nice to get these bone-breakers off my back. Anyway, my question is
this: How soon after I send the $1000 by Western Union tomorrow will

Luke brought over the $600 last night, and combined with what I
collected the other day and what I already had, I now have the $1000 I
need, and even a few dollars more. It turns out that because today is
11-Sept I won't be able to get to the Western Union office. There isn't
a Western Union in Morganton, so I have to go to Hickory to send the
money. I don't know about over there, but over here the Sheriff won't
let anybody travel on the highways today because of what happened a

Also, Donald, I have to confess that I am having some misgivings about
this. It bothers me that you have never bothered to place crosses and
wreathes at the scene of Binzagr's accident. I have to wonder why you

Hi Donald. I got my tire capped, and I'm going to be leaving for
Hickory directly. My wife is going to drive me there, because I
couldn't keep myself from having a premature celebration this morning.
I limited myself to a six-pack though, cuz I can't afford for anything

we are going to stop at Sears and get a credit card, and maybe go on a

Well I am really bummed. I wish you had told me it was going to cost so
much to send you the money. The gal at the Western Union office was
very nice, but she couldn't decide for me, so Laura Mae and I had to
make a decision right there on the spot. It seems that Western Union
wants $60 for themselves. In other words, it would have cost me $1060
to send you $1000! I guess I was figuring it would cost about $5 or $6,
like it does to get a cashiers check from the bank. Well, needless to
say, we didn't have $1060. Between the wad in my drawers, some spare
change in my pocket, what was in Laura Mae's purse, and the loose
change in my bowling bag in the trunk, we came up with $1035.13. We

I feel like we are right back on square one, except that I no longer
have to go in to the Chicken plant every morning. Yep, there was a note
in my trailer door when I got back from Hazel Loudfaart. She is the
plant's "nurse". Yeah, right. More like their spy. They send her around
to visit people who call in sick. If she reports back that you aren't
there, you get the pink slip. Sick. Sacked. Sucks. How's that for a
conjugation?
And not the least of my problems is Laura Mae. She says she is getting
pretty sick of this whole thing. I think she got her hopes pretty high
about a week ago, and with this dragging on and on she is losing faith.
Since she also started charging things again last week, I'm afraid
things are going to get worse every time the mailman visits.
How long do you think I have before the bank will start to suspect me?

thing. In order to get the $600 from Luke I had to promise him 6

Well, to make a short story long, I had a little trouble over the
weekend. You remember my sister’s husband Luke? I had to cut him in on

of the guys at the Chicken plant who I told about this told me that if
