Each Office is IndependentlyOwned and OperatedCOMMODORE’S COMMENTSThe new year really started with a bang—there were a lot of activities occurring atPYC during January. It all began with awonderful New Years Eve dance, followedby a Bowl Championship get together towatch the Tide and the Tigers play for football’s #1 ranking. The Change of Watch and Sundowners Ceremony tookplace mid-January and was followed by a LouisianaSaturday night party at the end of the month. I hope youcame to PYC to take part in some of these activities andhad an enjoyable time!PYC Sundowners CeremonyJere AllenSTAff NOTESStephen Suchy, General ManagerKaren and I attended the winter meeting of the GYA onJanuary 5 th and 6 th hosted by the Biloxi Yacht Club. After53 years of racing Flying Scots the GYA voted to establish2018 as the year to transition from the Flying Scots to anew boat.PYC is always a fun place to be on Friday night and agreat time to bring guests and perspective members. Billand Diana Mayo brought two special guests on Friday the13th. Chet Dufford and his wife Pat; Chet is skipper ofthe “Peace Maker” the 3 masted sailing vessel moored atPalafox Pier. Their other guest was Kamin Lamberton,Captain of the Global 1200 (the big blue boat at the port —you can’t miss it). It was great visiting with these individualsand hearing stories of their vessels and travels. Both werepresented with a PYC burgee and if you look closely atthe Global 1200 you will see the PYC burgee being flownjust below the Stars and Stripes. Kamin will also be thespeaker at the first Wednesday program in February talkingabout the Global 1200 and its capabilities.“Promoting the Finest Homes in Northwest Florida”February promises to be another busy month with theSuper Bowl, Intergalactic Keel Boat and Mardi Gras regattasbeing hosted by PYC. The cruising group of boaters will berafting up at Lulu’s in Gulf Shores for the weekend laterin the month. There is also a wonderful Valentine’s DayDinner on the 14 th . Hope to see many of you taking partin one of these events. The kitchen renovation continuesto progress on schedule and should be completed by ourValentine’s Dinner.Call 850-572-1944SpecialistProperty Previewpeithudson@aol.comPhotos by Julie ConnerleyFebruary ‘12 • Page

STAff VICE COMMODORE’S NOTES COMMENTSStephen Suchy, General ManagerAs you read this, the kitchen renovations shouldbe at least seventy-five percent complete. Allupdates, thus far, have been accomplished onschedule. The goal is to be fully operational by thethird week of February. If you have not been to theClub lately, you have missed some really terrificculinary creations! The kitchen staff has performed flawlessly inmaintaining great food and service, while operating out of the “limitedspace” banquet kitchen. Long time PYC member and frequent GrilleRoom patron, Skip Hartford exclaims, “There’s been no change inthe food quality. You wouldn’t even know that a kitchen change wasmade. The food is great!”Facilities initiatives for 2012 include improving the landscape onthe north side of the property, additional shade around the pool, and addressing security concerns at the docks and the dry storagearea. The Junior Clubhouse continues with improvements and willbe ready for our Junior Sailors come spring. Speaking of JuniorSailors, you’ll see a new face around the Club this spring. Pleasejoin me in welcoming our new Sailing Director, Scott Tillema, to theSouth’s Finest Yacht Club. Scott brings to the Club a wealth of onthe water experiences to enhance the boating experience for thewhole membership. In celebration of Arbor Day, the Escambia County ExtensionService and the Division of Forestry recently offered free seedlings.Commodore Jere Allen, First Lady Karen, Commodore EmeritusAlan McMillan, my husband Ian and I obtained twenty-eight waxmyrtles, and fifteen Shumard oaks at the Jones Swamp Reserve“Promoting the Finest Homes in Northwest Florida”for replanting on the property. Staff, Jr. and Carolyn Pulford alsopicked up an oak, two wax myrtles, and two River Birches. To ourdelight, Diane Schweigert was volunteering at the Arbor Day giveaway. These fast growing trees have been planted where it is myhope they will flourish. The wax myrtles are located in a line alongour west-side border, north of dry storage, which will provide anatural barrier between our boat yard neighbor and us. The matureheight will be 15-25 feet with a spread of 20-25 feet. The oaks wereplanted north of the tennis courts. At mature height, they will grow55-80 feet with a spread of 40-50 feet. All are marked with pinkfluorescent tape, so as you leave the property, look right and left totrack their growth. At planting time, all are approximately twelve toeighteen inches tall. Our Entertainment Chair, Linda Whitman, has exciting eventsplanned for the year. As you read this, we’ve already had a fantastictime at the Louisiana Saturday Night, and are looking forward to avery special Valentine’s Dinner. Additionally, we will sponsor sailboatracers in the Super Bowl and Mardi Gras Regattas this month, andwill be cruising over to Lulu’s in Gulf Shores for our monthly raft-up.Thank you to Jim and Linda Oyler for their leadership. According toplan, participating members will sponsor each raft up. Many thanksto all who signed up, and to Johnny and Ruth Smith for hostingthe February cruise. If you have an area or event you are interestedin, please contact a committee member listed on the back of the JibSheet. Together, we can make it happen! MEMBERSHIP REPORTFor a number of years we have held aprospective member night on the first Tuesdayof each month. This year the MembershipCommittee chose to move the prospectivemember nights to Friday night in time to havean application posted for the required twoweeks before the next Board meeting. The dates selectedso far are March 2, March 30, April 27, June 1, and June 29.These dates will be listed on the club calendar and we willsend a reminder email in the preceding week. The prospective member component of the evening willconsist only of a short meet and greet upstairs at 6:30. Theconsensus of the Membership Committee was that theactivity and camaraderie evident on Friday nights would bemore attractive than a “sales pitch” approach. The first fallson the same night as the Mexico party. Remember that if youhave a prospective member there is certainly no need to waitfor one of these occasions. At the Board meeting on January 18, three new memberswere approved: Landon McKinnon, Landon is a PrivateInvestigator; Bridgid Thomas, Bridgid is a research nurseat Andrews Institute; and Joseph Leone, Joseph is an FAAexaminer. Please introduce yourself to these new membersand consider them when you need crew.“Promoting the Finest Homes in Northwest Florida”BCS Championship PartyBob DawkinsSTAff NOTESStephen Suchy, General ManagerLEAVE OF ABSENCE FROM THE CLUBSome of our members have faced unfortunatesignificant monetary, medical, or other hardships, forcingthem to seek temporary leaves of absence from PYC.Questions have arisen about whether those on leavemay come to the Club and, if so, when. In a nutshell, members on LOA should not use PYC as if they wereregular members and should not generally come to PYCeven as a member’s guest. Exceptions to that wouldbe when the member on leave is also a member of anorganization that has a function at PYC, when invitedby a member to attend a special function or celebrationat PYC, or for PYC sponsored regattas. While we arestriving to be fair to our broader membership, we do notwant our members on LOA to feel uncomfortable whenvisiting the Club when exceptions allow, and we lookforward to welcoming them back as full members, astheir personal circumstances permit.Call 850-572-1944SpecialistProperty Previewpeithudson@aol.comOwned and OperatedIndependentlyis Office EachFebruary ‘12 • Page

STAff fleet captain’s NOTES reportStephen Suchy, General ManagerDON’T LET THE KIDS HAVE ALLTHE FUN! When you see our mostjunior Opti racers on the water in Januaryhoning their skills, you can be forgivenfor thinking “Its too late for me to learn.”NOT!Over the past year I have seen quite a number ofmembership applications posted where the stated goalsincluded a desire to get involved in sailing. Around the barby I have many other members express the desire to getback in to sailing (by the way…I have been keeping a list). What is stopping you? THE TIME IS COMING SOON TOACT ON THAT URGE!This is a cautionary tale for the young members expectingchildren, or who have young children. It’s easy to fall in thetrap of dropping the kid off at soccer/baseball/lacrosse…and camp out on the sideline for the games. Your daysplaying soccer/baseball/lacrosse are predominantly behindyou, so getting out on the field with them is not realistic. Butsailing is different! Ask the Rices, Prochaskas, Buziaks,McMillans, Melroses, Smiths (Chuck’s Clan)… They willtell you some of their most precious memories are thetimes they spent on the water with their children. Now, you may be concerned that you sailing skills arerusty, or non-existent. We can help you get over thatbarrier. Just as the weather starts to warm our new SailingDirector, Scott Tillema, will report aboard. CRUISER’S CORNERNew Year’s Day was once again theopening day of PYC’s cruising season.Thirty-five to forty survivors from the NewYear’s Eve party gathered to begin theyear with mimosas and bloody Marys in thesailing center. The weather was beautifuland we made good use of the deck. If you haven’t observed themarina and surrounding waters from one of the rocking chairs onthe deck of the sailing center you have missed one of the bestviews in Pensacola. The variety of brunch foods was amazing, plentiful, and delicious. Spirits were high as we discussed the funraft-ups we had in 2011 and the expectations of a great sailingseason in 2012.Cruising for 2012 is in the planning stages so look for datesand destinations in next month’s Jib Sheet. Most of our raft-updestinations are accessible by auto and we welcome everyone. If you are not on the cruising list and wish to be added, drop ane-mail to jnlagain@gmail.com and we will be happy to add you tothe list.STAff NOTESJim & Linda OylerNew Year’s Day at the Sailing CenterStephen Suchy, General ManagerWHY WE SAIL IN WINTERWe left the slip about 3 PM on January 7. The wind was verylight after the recent rain shower and the sky looked threateningin all directions. We had planned to spend the night at FortMcRae and were determined not to let a little thing like weatherstop us. As we motored toward the navy base we marveled athow wonderful the weak January sun felt when it peaked out frombehind the clouds. Just beyond the mouth of Pensacola Passwe crossed the tide line. There in the tide line were more birdsthan we had ever seen before. Thousands of birds, includinggulls, pelicans, least terns, cormorants, and pipers were diningfrom one side of the bay to the other. We joined other boats thathad stopped to watch and take pictures of this amazing sight.A little further into our voyage we encountered a dredgeworking in the land cut. A short exchange of pleasantries on theVHF radio assured both parties that each knew the intentions ofthe other and we could pass safely. As we left the intercoastal a group of eight to ten dolphinjoined us and led us all the way into the anchorage from thewest. They left us only after our anchor was securely set. Thenone of them gave a tail wave and they all proceeded out the eastside of the anchorage. Except for one other sail boat, one powerboat, and one tent on the beach, we were alone at Fort McRae.We had just barely recovered from the dolphin encounter whenour attention turned to a breathtaking sunset. The almost fullmoon was rising at the same time the sun was setting, treatingus to a spectacular display of color. A perfectly grilled steak anda glass of red wine topped off the evening.By noon Sunday the breeze had picked up to almost 10 knotsand we enjoyed a glorious sail back across the bay to PYC.Think what we would have missed if we had let a little rain keepus home. Once secured to thedock you’ll be able to enjoy the excellent facilities available at theClub! The week end’s activities got underway Friday evening with aSouth Florida clam bake and live entertainment. This event washeld at the Club’s pool and water side tiki bar and gazebo; what awonderful venue! On Saturday spouses were treated to high tea and a vintagefashion show. FCYC Directors, of course, devoted the afternoon toa series of business meetings and lectures. Two important issueswere presented and approved by the assembled Directors. First theslate of officers for 2012 presented by the Nominating Committeewas approved. The new officers, including Commodore-ElectHarry Peret of the Sarasota YC and Vice Commodore-Elect RayStarsman of the Isles YC, will be installed at the March FCYCGeneral Meeting. Second the Council’s operating budget for 2012was approved. The Council enjoys a solid financial position, but itwas noted that revenue from sales of” FCYC Cruising Guides” waslower than anticipated.During the Government Affairs Committee report an issue ofimmediate import for PYC was discussed. The Coast Guard’s newmarine radio network Rescue 21 is now fully operational in the Gulfof Mexico, and rescue centers can now receive instant distresscalls from our DSC-capable VHF marine radios. However 90%of the VHF emergency calls monitored by the Coast Guard do notcontain position data and nearly 60% do not provide identificationdata! For all boaters at PYC, let’s insure that our marine radiosare registered and interfaced with our GPS systems!Saturday’s program concluded with a gourmet dinner and dancingand entertainment. Coral Ridge YC should be congratulated forhosting a great FCYC General Meeting. The next General Meeting will be held in March at the SarasotaYacht Club. Remember all PYC members are welcome andencouraged to attend.
