THIS IS CATAWBA COLLEGECatawba College was founded in Newton,North Carolina in 1851 by the GermanReformed Church. In 1890, Catawbabecame a coeducational institution, with thefirst woman graduate completing her studiesin 1893. Officials closed the Newton campusin 1923 and moved to its present locationin Salisbury, re-opening in 1925. In1957, the Evangelical and Reformed Churchmerged to form the United Church of Christ,with which the College maintains affiliation.Catawba seeks to serve the Salisbury-RowanCounty community through its programs andservices. The Roberston College-CommunityCenter, a facility built as a joint venture with thecommunity over 35 years ago, houses theShuford School of Performing Arts and showcasesmusical and theatre productions from thecollege and the community. Similarly, the college’sathletic facilities have been enhanced bethe local community and are available to thelocal residents as well as the students.In the more than 75 years since Catawbaopened its doors in the Salisbury community, ithas built a tradition of successful graduates whocontinue to honor the College by their achievementsand enable it through their support tostrengthen with each entering class. These graduatesinclude physicians, attorneys, teachers andcollege professors, corporate executives, actorsand musicians, social workers and others whocontribute to our society in a variety of ways.From one building, three-quarters of a centuryago in Salisbury, Catawba College today hasgrown to a campus of 27 buildings on 276 acres,with 189 acres devoted to an outstanding ecologicalpreserve. Almost all of the buildings oncampus have undergone renovations in therecent past and two new buildings, the CatawbaCollege Center for the Environment and theCatawba Sports Center are now completed.Over 1,300 students representing over 25 statesand several foreigncountries attendCatawba. PETER BOURQUEHead CoachPeter Bourque is in his 14th season as the head coach of the Catawbalacrosse program. He arrived in June 1993 to build the program from itsinception. Along with his coaching duties, Bourque also serves as anAssistant Athletic Director at Catawba.In 2005, Catawba advanced to the Deep South Conference Tournamentfinal for the second straight season. The Indians posted a school recordwith ten wins for the season in 2004. Bourque has been rewarded for his efforts by being namedthe Deep South Conference Coach of the Year in both 2000 and 2003. In 1999, Bourque wasselected to coach in the prestigious USILA North-South All-Star game in Saratoga Springs, NY.He graduated from Guilford College in 1988, where he earned a BS in Sports Management.While at Guilford, Bourque was a four-year athlete, and received the Neuris-English AthleticLeadership Award, recognizing him as one of the outstanding athletes at the school. In 1992,Bourque went on to receive his M.Ed. in School Administration from Lynchburg College, inVirginia, where he was a member of Kappa Delta Pi International Education Honor Society.Bourque was born in Springfield, MA, but was reared in Westfield, NJ. He graduated fromWestfield High School and The Gunnery Prep School in Washington, CT.Bourque carries with him much experience, having coached at Greensboro College,Lynchburg College, M.I.T Cambridge, MA, and Guilford. In the summer,Bourque serves as a director for the successful Dixie Top 150lacrosse camps.During his tenure at Catawba, Bourque is proud to have coached 23All-Deep South Conference performers. He has also coached four All-Americans and one Academic All-American, the USILA’s top award.Bourque has served on several NCAA Division II lacrosse committeesand currently holds the post as Division II Regional Director for All-American Selection Committee.Bourque and his wife, Ann, reside in Salisbury. They have three children;Kathlenn Isabel (10), Brendan Peter (9) and Molly Ann (7).MATTHEW SHINNEYAssistant CoachMatthew Shinney enters his first season as the top assistant coach withthe Catawba College lacrosse team. He will serve as offensive coordinator,oversee recruiting and handle other aspects of day to day operations of thelacrosse program.Shinney comes to Catawba from Fairleigh Dickinson University. At FDU, Shinney wasinvolved with all aspects of the program, including scouting, game planning, off-season conditioningand recruiting.Shinney also coached under the guidance of Hall of Fame Coach Tony Manzelli atWeymouth High School. During his time at Weymouth, Shinney helped produce two highschool All-Americans.As a player, Shinney has most recently seen action as a player for the Irish NationalLacrosse Team. In 2004, he was selected to the All-Europe Team as he helped lead Ireland to a6-1 record at the European Championships. He was also a member of the team which won theGold Medal at the 2005 Celtic Cup Championship.Shinney has been on staff at numerous lacrosse camps, including Johns Hopkins,Princeton, Cornell, Deleware and Rutgers. He has also served as a director with SSLAX ofMassachusetts for the past seven years and works with Morris Select and the LacrosseAcademy in New Jersey.1
