THIS IS CATAWBA COLLEGE<strong>Catawba</strong> <strong>College</strong> was founded in Newton,North Carolina in 1851 by the GermanReformed Church. In 1890, <strong>Catawba</strong>became a coeducational institution, with thefirst woman graduate completing her studiesin 1893. Officials closed the Newton campusin 1923 and moved to its present locationin Salisbury, re-opening in 1925. In1957, the Evangelical and Reformed Churchmerged to form the United Church of Christ,with which the <strong>College</strong> maintains affiliation.<strong>Catawba</strong> seeks to serve the Salisbury-RowanCounty community through its programs andservices. The Roberston <strong>College</strong>-CommunityCenter, a facility built as a joint venture with thecommunity over 35 years ago, houses theShuford School of Performing Arts and showcasesmusical and theatre productions from thecollege and the community. Similarly, the college’sathletic facilities have been enhanced bethe local community and are available to thelocal residents as well as the students.In the more than 75 years since <strong>Catawba</strong>opened its doors in the Salisbury community, ithas built a tradition of successful graduates whocontinue to honor the <strong>College</strong> by their achievementsand enable it through their support tostrengthen with each entering class. These graduatesinclude physicians, attorneys, teachers andcollege professors, corporate executives, actorsand musicians, social workers and others whocontribute to our society in a variety of ways.From one building, three-quarters of a centuryago in Salisbury, <strong>Catawba</strong> <strong>College</strong> today hasgrown to a campus of 27 buildings on 276 acres,with 189 acres devoted to an outstanding ecologicalpreserve. Almost all of the buildings oncampus have undergone renovations in therecent past and two new buildings, the <strong>Catawba</strong><strong>College</strong> Center for the Environment and the<strong>Catawba</strong> Sports Center are now completed.Over 1,300 students representing over 25 statesand several foreigncountries attend<strong>Catawba</strong>.
