Somerville Donor’s Report | 3FOR GIFTS RECEIVED 01.08.09 - 31.07.10From the PrincipalThank you for investing in Somerville….Since I took up my post as Principal in September 2010, Ihave been struck by the wonderful support that Somervilliansand other friends give to the College. It is a great pleasure totake this opportunity to thank each person who has madea donation of either time or money, for their generosity andcommitment to the College.Membership of Somerville is for life, andI feel very fortunate that we have such anactive network of Somervillians involved inthe life of the College today. The proportionof them giving to the College increased from11.5% to an unprecedented 19% in the pastyear: a truly impressive achievement and atestament to the commitment of our alumniand friends. Like some other colleges,Somerville depends on regular donationsfor part of its running costs, so thesecontributions make a great difference. This year more than ever before, we alsoneed your help to deal with the cuts ingovernment funding for higher education. An 80% cut in the grant that supports teachingand additional cuts to humanities fundingwere among the measures announced earlierin 2011. Tuition fees at Oxford, as at manyother universities, will be increased nearlythreefold to cope with the shortfall*; butthey will be covered by loans to the studentsthemselves, repayable only after anindividual makes more than a certain levelof income. The new dispensation introducesa high level of uncertainty and, by placingso much more of the cost on studentspersonally, it has created a widespreadsense that higher education is becomingunaffordable. Somerville is committed, aswe always have been, to making an Oxfordeducation accessible to the brighteststudents, whatever their financial means;and in line with government and Universitypolicy we plan to redouble our efforts.Against that background, the newaccommodation buildings on the RadcliffeObservatory Quarter (ROQ) site will beespecially well timed. Opening in October2011, the buildings provide sixty-eightnew rooms that will make it possible forthe great majority of our students to livein College for their entire undergraduatecourse. They will avoid the extra costs* www.admin.ox.ac.uk/vc/news/studentfunding

4 | Somerville Donor’s ReportFOR GIFTS RECEIVED 01.08.09 - 31.07.10involved in a year’s contract for accommodationin their second year, which has been thepattern until now. In effect, each room is a smallbursary or scholarship. But we also need toraise additional funds for scholarships on anunprecedented scale, to make it possible forstudents to attend Somerville without financialanxiety and to reassure them that they really can.The ROQ buildings, which have been the mainfocus of our fundraising during the past year, area landmark for the College in other importantways. Establishing our position right at the heartof the University as its centre of gravity shifts tothe new developments on this ten-acre site, andenabling us to generate approximately doubleour income from lettings to conferences in thevacations, the project places Somerville on anew footing both financially and in terms of itslocation. With your support for scholarshipsas well, the College will become even more ofa magnet for the most talented students. Please feel free to write, phone or emailwith any questions or suggestions aboutSomerville’s finances and our plans forthe future. Meeting and hearing fromSomervillians and friends of the College isone of the greatest pleasures of my job.Meanwhile, let me thank you most warmlyfor all your support in 2009 - 2010.ALICE PROCHASKAPrincipalApril 2011

Somerville Donor’s Report | 5FOR GIFTS RECEIVED 01.08.09 - 31.07.10DevelopmentDirector’s Report1,100 Somervillians and friends made a difference in 2009 -2010. It is a privilege to report on a significant year forfundraising at Somerville. It has been overwhelmingto experience the commitment and the generosity ofSomervillians and friends at all levels.Somerville has a proud tradition of supportingtalented students and pioneering scholars;since the College’s foundation, persistentfundraising efforts have been central toachieving our objectives. In fact, the very first woman from overseas tostudy at Oxford came from India to Somervillein the 1880s thanks to a fundraising campaignled by the founding Principal, Madeline ShawLefevre. The Indian Law student Miss CorneliaSorabji did the College proud; she was the firstwoman to qualify as a lawyer in India, and shecampaigned tirelessly for hundreds of womenand orphans on the sub-continent whohad no legal voice of their own. Miss ShawLefevre’s personal investment in securing thisscholarship was considerable but the yieldwas invaluable to many hundreds of peopledefended by Cornelia Sorabji in the late 19thand early 20th century.Somerville has changed significantly sinceMiss Sorabji’s days, the transformativepower of our philanthropic community isundiminished. Somervillians continue tomake a real difference in their respectivedomains, and donations received year onyear still provide vital funding for our coreactivities. With the recent confirmationof deep cuts in government funding forhigher education, the importance of theSomerville community of donors has becomemore apparent than ever. It is therefore aparticularly uplifting experience to reporton a year where the percentage of alumnisupporting the College has increased from11.5% in the previous financial year to animpressive 19% this year, nothing less thana philanthropic crescendo! With gifts of allsizes, 1,100 alumni and friends of the Collegehave given £1,536,000 in restricted andunrestricted gifts towards our priorities andthereby demonstrated their commitment tohelping the College secure the Somervilleeducation for the future. The Somerville Campaign, Celebrating the Past,Investing in the Future, was launched in thesummer of 2009 with the ambitious aim tosecure £25 million towards our three strategicpriorities: student support, fellowship fundingand College facilities. By the closure of thelast financial year, more than £13 million

6 | Somerville Donor’s ReportFOR GIFTS RECEIVED 01.08.09 - 31.07.10had been raised in cash and pledges, andas I am writing this report (April 2011), itis encouraging to know that we have nowpassed the £15 million mark. The flagship project for the Campaign, ournew student accommodation buildings onthe Radcliffe Observatory Quarter site, havebeen the focus for our fundraising effortsover the past year. More than £800,000was raised in cash and pledges towardsthe project in this financial year alone, bringing the total raised to £1.1 millionof our £2 million minimum fundraisingtarget. More than 600 donors contributedtowards the building appeal and confirmedthat donations of all sizes really do make asubstantial difference. A generous grant fromthe Wolfson Foundation and a wonderfuldonation from the Binks Trust offered vitalmomentum at an early stage of the appeal. For further information, see www.some.ox.ac.uk/roqThe remarkable increase in donor participationwas facilitated by the innovative Make YourMark mailing funded and developed by twocreative Somervillians. This mini campaignraised more than £70,000 from 350 donorswho will all have their names engraved on the“Donor Wall” in the new buildings, along with200 other donors and benefactors. Our donors have also demonstrated theirgenerosity by supporting student bursariesand fellowship endowment. As recentgovernment announcements have confirmed,we will have to raise funds for student supporton a completely unprecedented scale in theimmediate future in order to attract the mosttalented students from all backgrounds. Itis therefore heartening to experience howdonors continue to provide essential supportfor the College’s Bursary Fund so we canoffer financial aid to more than 26% of ourstudents. £200,000 was raised towards studentsupport and fellowships in 2009 - 2010, andthese donations offered vital support fornamed bursaries, scholarships, hardshipgrants and teaching funds. Our successful telethon in October 2009spearheaded Somerville’s regular givingprogramme and was the first telephonecampaign in five years. Twelve dedicatedstudent callers made contact withSomervillians of all ages around the worldto raise an impressive £130,000 towards theAnnual Fund. 56% of the alumni reacheddecided to make a donation. The studentstruly enjoyed the inspirational conversationsabout Somerville past and present, and somecallers were lucky to get useful career adviceas well! The Annual Fund provides essentialsupport towards College priorities and isspent within the year. Particular emphasiswas given this year to student support, hardship grants and the new buildings.

Somerville Donor’s Report | 7FOR GIFTS RECEIVED 01.08.09 - 31.07.10Legacy income has always been central to the survival of theCollege, and we are tremendously grateful for the £512,000received from unrestricted legacies in 2009 - 2010. In responseto our questionnaire, 62 Somervillians chose to inform us oftheir generous plans to leave a legacy to Somerville and this isimmensely helpful as it enables the College to plan for the future. The Somerville Campaign owes much of its success to ourdistinguished Development Board (see page 28), chaired withgreat dedication and expertise by Mrs Harriet Maunsell (1962)and Mrs Clara Freeman (1971).I would like to express a heartfelt thank you to you all for makingsuch a defining difference to Somerville in 2009 - 2010.With gratitude,JULIE CHRISTIANE HAGEFellow and Development DirectorIt was while I wasdoing an OpenUniversity FrenchDiploma, followingretirement as a GP,that I realised againthe richness of theeducation I’dreceived at Somervilleand Oxford. I feltI’d like to dosomething to helpothers benefit too.CAROLA HAIGH(1963, Clinical Medicine)

Somerville Donor’s Report | 23FOR GIFTS RECEIVED 01.08.09 - 31.07.10Annual FundA gift to the Somerville Annual Fund is used within the year in which it is raised and helps theCollege to meet its revenue costs from year to year, thus ensuring the long-term sustainability ofthe College as it limits the demands on the endowment. The main areas that the Annual Fundprovides support for are student bursaries, buildings and tutorials. Regular gifts to the AnnualFund are the most powerful means of giving as they help the College to plan ahead with confidenceand make the most of all donations.Emily SearlesThe Annual Fund is atthe heart of all we do atSomerville. Without thefunds it provides so muchwould be left undone. Witheven the smallest gift we areable to provide resources forthe College and for students.DR ALICE PROCHASKA (1965)PrincipalI really enjoyed and valuedmy time at Somerville.I decided to give to theAnnual Fund because Iwanted to maintain a linkwith the College and makea contribution, howeversmall, which would helpfuture Somervillians enjoythe same opportunities I did.LILY CHORLTON(2001, Classics)My decision to attendSomerville was lifechanging, and I am sohappy at how this first yearhas turned out. Somervilleis such a unique communityproviding a diverse studentbody, inspiring tutors, anda supportive and dynamicacademic environment, which has allowed me toflourish. I couldn’t behappier and it was a realprivilege to talk toSomervillians during thetelethon and receiveadvice on where mystudies might lead.EMILY SEARLES(2009, Human Sciences)2010 Telethon caller

24 | Somerville Donor’s ReportFOR GIFTS RECEIVED 01.08.09 - 31.07.10Donations to Student SupportSomerville has a proud history of admitting talented students on a needs-blind basis. Supportfor bursaries and scholarships helps the College to continue with this and ensure that futuregenerations of Somervillians can achieve their full potential.Somerville already contributes significant funding to around 25% of our undergraduate intakefor countering hardship and recognising excellence. There is now no doubt that tuition feessubjected to market forces will continue to grow. Equally, it is clear government funding forhigher education – already significantly reduced over the past decade – will reduce further. In theHumanities and Social Sciences, funding for postgraduate research has dropped to such an extentthat as many as 75% of masters and doctoral students must fund their research themselves.Catherine and Peter OppenheimerHugh CumberPeter’s sister Ruth, who wasan undergraduate in PPEat Somerville, died muchtoo young (having writtenon juvenile justice –TakingJuvenile Justice Seriously,Scottish Academic Press,1985), and we wanted to dosomething in her memory. We know how difficult it canbe for people from modestbackgrounds to achievetheir academic potential.Supporting poor studentshas been a core principle ofOxford’s colleges since theMiddle Ages, and a traditionthat is now more importantthan ever to maintain.Having a bursary thatmemorialises Michala’sname means a great deal tomyself and Michala’s familyand friends. Especially aswe know that Michala, whowas from a working classbackground, and who hada strong social conscienceand a belief in the benefitsof education would havestrongly supported a meansof helping students infinancial need to have thewonderful opportunity ofstudying at Oxford.JANE LOADER(1995, Biological Sciences)My current research andthe continuation of myacademic work would beimpossible without thekindness and generosity ofdonors. I feel privileged tohave been selected for theLady Margaret ThatcherScholarship; thank you forgiving me the opportunityto continue my researchand to pursue a career inacademia.HUGH CUMBER(2010, MSt English)CATHERINE (PASTERNAK-SLATER, 1960, PPP) ANDPETER OPPENHEIMER

Somerville Donor’s Report | 25FOR GIFTS RECEIVED 01.08.09 - 31.07.10Donations to FellowshipsSupport for fellowships is essential in order to preserve the highest quality of research andteaching in perpetuity. Somerville believes in the power of education to transform lives, bothin those experiencing an Oxford education and in the impact they go on to make in the world. The tutorial system is at the heart of everything we do and our Fellows not only help students toquestion and seek the answers for themselves, but undertake world-class research in librariesand laboratories accross the University. The tutorial system is expensive and due to continuing cuts in government funding, and theresulting freeze in replacing academic posts by the University, Somerville’s funding of fellowshipsis in a vulnerable position. At present, we can meet the annual cost of almost 60% of our fellowshipneeds. Fully funding posts by endowing them is therefore a priority as it will ensure the disciplinecan be taught in perpetuity.I benefited hugely from mytime at Somerville and feela sense of appreciation andgratitude to the institutionthat helped give me afantastic jumping off pointinto the world of businessand life! Now, more than20 years later I am proudto say that I read Physicsat Oxford, but I am evenprouder to say my fourclosest friends are from mydays at Somerville. I nowfeel that it is important forme to return something toSomerville and help passon the positive experiencesand opportunities to others.I hope my donation willhelp Somerville to sustainits ability to educate andnurture talented people andgive them the opportunitiesthat I received.Tutors at Somerville trulyare leaders in their field. One cannot help but bein awe – I’ve studied theirpublished work and amnow sitting face to facewith the author!LI ASHROV(2008, Human Sciences)MAGGIE KNOTTENBELT(Taylor, 1985, Physics)Li Ashrov

Financial Position&ObjectivesFinancial Year 2009 - 2010

Somerville Donor’s Report | 31FOR GIFTS RECEIVED 01.08.09 - 31.07.10The financial environment of the last year has beenextremely difficult, with significant reductions in statutoryfunding, essential expenditure on building refurbishmentand inflationary increases in other costs. Although thefinancial position of the College remains of concern,Somerville – through continued prudent and efficientmanagement of resources – constantly strives to maintainthe highest academic standards, relating to the corepurpose of the College.Against such a negative background, thefinancial support from alumni and friendsof the College has once again been a keyfactor in enabling the College to fulfil itsobjectives. As a result of this, Somervillehad a small surplus of £32,000 for the yearending July 2010, excluding the restricteddonations and legacies transferred tothe endowment. This compared with asurplus of £794,000 for the previous year. The main reason for the change was thatthe surplus in 2008 - 2009 was due to theproceeds from the sale of a college houseat 179 Banbury Road which was no longerrequired for student accommodation. TheCollege continued to benefit from legaciesand donations with income of £512,000from unrestricted legacies and £150,000from unrestricted donations and therewas a significant increase in restricteddonations, in particular for the ROQ studentaccommodation project. There was a smalldecrease in income from conference andcommercial events and a small reduction ininvestment income and interest due to theimpact of the economic recession. Therewere some major improvements to buildingsand facilities which were capitalised, asrequired under the SORP format of accounts.Routine expenditure on buildings for repairsand renewals decreased when compared tothe previous year. Under the SORP format, increases in fixed assets have to be fundedfrom the Free General Reserve. This meantthat the surplus achieved this year wasagain fully used to finance expenditureon essential building works with the neteffect being that the Free General Reserveremained at zero.

The returnfor the year on the College’s investmentswas 18.1%. The College’s main investmentportfolio is managed by Newton InvestmentManagement Ltd under a discretionarymandate and they performed above the setperformance benchmark by 1.5%. Advice onthe College’s investments is also providedby alumni with significant experience ininvestment management. The value of theendowment maintains Somerville’s positionnear the middle of the league table of Oxfordcolleges ranked by endowment income. However, the use of the majority of thisendowment funding is restricted by the wishesof the donors, which means that the incomemust be put to the funding of specific subjectsor activities. Currently the majority of thesefunds can be used but restricted funds doreduce the College’s level of flexibility to adaptshould our needs change in the future. Only60% of the cost of our senior teaching posts iscovered by sufficient endowment to preservethem in perpetuity.
