DiatonicPeter BraukmannDiatonic Accordion in EuropeThere remains debate concerning the origin of the diatonic buttonaccordion. Some scholars maintain that it was invented in Germany in1826, while others maintain its origins are in the Vienna of the early19th century. In any case, over the following 120 years, this wonderfuland easy to learn instrument was successfully integrated into folk musicacross Europe. In Germany, it has been the classical musical instrumentof the working population for many generations. Hans Albers playedthe accordion throughout his cinematic career. Today many old men inthe Sorbian Areas around Bautzen still play ”La Paloma“ with passion. InFrance, the diatonic button accordion is a mainstay of traditional dancemusic along with the violin and flute. In Ireland and England, specialtuning techniques were used to modify the sound of the accordion tosuit regional tastes. The diatonic button accordion revitalized the dancemusic scene in Austria as seen with the influences of the band “HotelPalindrone” in world music. In Germany, the band “Laway” has alsobecome a leader in excellent accordion-driven dance music.History of the Accordion in North AmericaIt is believed that the accordion came to America with travelling Germanmerchants, and gained popularity in various communities, includingGermanic regions of the northern Midwest, French Louisiana, and theTexas/Mexico border area. The legacy of the accordion is still evidentin the genres of folk music that remain in those regions. One of thesemerchants was Fritz Veerkamp, a HOHNER employee. In the early 1900s,Veerkamp travelled extensively through New York City, Louisiana, Texas, and into Mexico, taking the button box accordion with him. Althoughthe accordion had been in North America for some time as Germanfamilies immigrated to the US and Mexico with their instruments,Mr. Veerkamp was the first to establish direct channels of distributionbetween Germany and North America. He purchased accordions directlyfrom HOHNER for sale to both dealers and individual musicians. It is clearthat the button box made its way into the US and Mexico simultaneously.Flaco Jimenez and Tara LindaCorona II & III, 31 Button, GCFROW 2PUSHPULLROW 1 ROW 3g G c C f FTOWARDSCHINdeDEgaGAcb bCB bTOWARDSKNEEa m A d m D b bB bBELLOWSe b2 c 1 f 1 a 1 c 2 f 2 a 2 c 3 f 3 a 3c #2 22 e 1 23 g 1 24 b b1 25 d 2 26 e 2 27 g 2 28 b b2 29 d 3 30 e 331c #1 g b d 1 g 1 b 1 d 2 g 2 b 2 d 3e b1 1 a 2 c 1 3 e 1 4 f #1 5 a 1 6 c 2 7 e 2 8 f #2 9 a 210Pacho Radaf #1 g c 1 e 1 g 1 c 2 e 2 g 2 c 3 e 3 g 3g #1 11 b 12 d 1 13 f 1 14 a 1 15 b 1 16 d 2 17 f 2 18 a 2 19 b 2 20 d 321Fingering ChartThree-row diatonic accordions are similar to thetwo-row diatonics with the third row either a semitone higher than the original (now middle) row, ora fourth above the second row. The only form of entertainment duringthese trips was singing, and playing guitars or indigenous gaita flutes, known as kuisis in the Kogi language. In the Kogi tradition, news weretransmitted through songs. It is said that troubadours from Aruba and Curacao probably introducedthe accordion into the region. According to one legend, a shipwreckbrought the accordion to Colombia. The ship was enroute from Germanyto Argentina when it wrecked in the Magdalena river off the Colombiancoast of the Atlantic. Even though there is much speculation when andhow the accordion made its way into Colombia, we know for a factthe three-row button accordion has become the national symbol of thiscountry.30 DIATONICDIATONIC31
