2005 Spartans RoundupWhen the 2005 AU men’s soccer team steps on the field, they will attempt to repeat the success of the 2004 campaign, when the Spartans were 15-3-4 and captured the NorthernIllinois-Iowa Conference (NIIC) championship. With a substantial core of returning student-athletes, the2005 squad aims to use the experience gained by the currentjunior and sophomore classes. “This season’s juniors andsophomores have significant experience in key games asfreshmen,” Head Coach Pete Watkins said.Watkins, entering his third season this fall, has a 22-14-6overall record and 7-3-0 in NIIC competition. The 2004 AUsquad captured the NIIC title in a double-overtime shootoutagainst NIIC juggernaut Dominican <strong>University</strong>. AU alsohad key victories over regional opponents from the LakeMichigan Conference (NIIC and LMC will merge following2005 season) (Wisconsin Lutheran and Lakeland), CCIW(North Central College), Midwest Conference (MonmouthCollege and Grinnell College) and Iowa Intercollegiate(Dubuque <strong>University</strong>).The 2005 Spartans boast only one senior; goalkeeper JeffBishop (Norridge, Ill./Harper C.C.). Bishop is a transfer anddid not see significant playing time in his first season at AU.The most unique element of the AU team this seasonis the experienced junior class, many of whom playeda significant role in the team’s improvement as freshmenand sophomores. Local standouts Alex DeGurian (<strong>Aurora</strong>,Ill./Neuqua Valley), Rob Michaels (Hinckley, Ill./Hinckley-Big Rock) and Amador Contreras (<strong>Aurora</strong>, Ill./CentralCatholic) all had key playing time over the past two years.DeGurian was a NIIC First Team All-Conference and FirstTeam All-Region selection in 2004. Taylor Kilcrease (WichitaFalls, Texas/Rider), Jeff Horst (Greenville, Mich./Greenville)and Mike Skupien (Western Springs, Ill./Carthage College)made major contributions, playing with composure and ahigh level of experience. Junior transfer Brad Johns (<strong>Aurora</strong>,Ill./Butler <strong>University</strong>) brings experience to the Spartandefense after spending his first two collegiate seasons atDivision I Butler <strong>University</strong>.The talented sophomore class had a big impact on the<strong>Aurora</strong> <strong>University</strong> men’s soccer program. Tyler Klotz (BigRock, Ill./Hinckley-Big Rock), Jordan Barry (Decatur, Ill./St. Teresa), Marshall Reed (Otsego, Mich./Otsego), ScottAnderson (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs), Jody Hall (SugarGrove, Ill./Bartlett) and Phil Tedford (Morris, Ill./Morris)all played significant roles for the AU offense last season.Reed scored seven goals and tallied four assists for 18points. Klotz scored six goals, five assists and 17 points, while Jody Hall had four goals and three assists for 11points. As a group, the sophomores scored 21 goals anddished out 13 assists for 55 points.“We need to remain a balanced scoring squad to defendour NIIC title. We lost two key players, but that provides anopportunity for Tyler Klotz, Marshall Reed, Jordan Barry andAmador Contreras to step up,” said Watkins.AU Men’s Soccer3

2005 Spartans RoundupLast year, one of the most-improved areas for theSpartans was the defensive corps. Drew Taylor (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) settled into the AU backline seamlessly andcaptured NIIC Newcomer of the Year honors and First TeamAll-Conference. Jim Spann (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South),a NIIC First Team All-Conference selection, proved he couldhandle the job as a stalwart for the Spartan defense. JoeyCatrino (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) and Lance Austin(Otsego, Mich./Otsego) were significant contributers tothe AU defense and proved to be vital assets in securingthe championship.“Our leadership in goal is a key. Senior Jeff Bishop andfreshmen Jon Unruh (St. Joseph, Mo./Central) and TylerItaliano (St. Louis) are deadlocked in the competition to start. Both freshmen come from top-flight clubs, where they havesignificant experience at a high level,” Waktins mentioned. The freshman class boasts two players from Peoria NotreDame, the Illinois Class A State Championship team: ForwardChase Corricelli (Peoria, Ill.) was the leading scorer with26 goals as a senior, and backer Brian Barnett (Peoria, Ill.)brings talent and experience to the Spartan defense. Othernewcomers to the 2005 Spartans are Jon Sample (Naperville,Ill./Neuqua Valley), Adam Prevost (Hinckley, Ill./Hinckley-Big Rock), Jared Shavrnoch (Millington, Mich./Lakeville),Rich Sylvester (Roscommon, Mich./Roscommon),Matt Wasowicz (Moberly, Mo./Moberly), Akira J. Host(Chicago/Yokuta HS – Japan), Sam Kilani (Westmont,Ill./Hinsdale Central), Ricardo Gallegos (Chicago/Prosser),Eric Main (Millington, Mich./Millington) and WinstonMcCauley (Bloomington, Ill./Winston-Salem State).Watkins added, “Our guys should compete internallyduring the week and then compete as a united force 20 timesa year. For us to step up to our top regional competition—UW-Whitewater, Wheaton College, Loras College, CentreCollege and Principia—we must remain a family.”4 AU Men’s Soccer
