64 Translating Medieval OrissaRamayana having the Bhanita of Siddheswar Das. Its archaiclanguage, subversive tone, and ethnic representation were closerto Sarala’s style. He then argued that Bichitra Ramayana and notBilanka Ramayana, was the text produced by Sarala. K.C.Sahoo has also argued that Bilanka Ramayana could not havebeen by Sarala because its source text, Adbhuta Ramayana waswritten only between the last part of 14 th and the first part of 15 thcentury, which is close to Sarala’s own time. His secondargument is that Bilanka Ramayana was influenced byJagamohana Ramayana in more than one way. The language, style and syntax of Jagamohana Ramayana are more archaicthan those of Bilanka Ramayana. Therefore, he places the text atthe last part of 16 th and the early part of 17 th century (Sahoo:1995 pp. 62-64). Snehalata Patnaik, the editor of theauthoritative text of Bilanka Ramayana, is also of the sameview. Hence, the scholars now seem to have reached a consensusthat Bilanka Ramayana was not authored by Sarala but bysomeone having a similar name.REFERENCESBishop, D. H.
