Stree, the feminist press fromKolkata, has published volumes such as Cast Me Out If You Will:Stories and Memoirs (1998) from Malayalam, a collection ofJyotirmoyi Devi’s stories from Bengali, The Impermanence of Lies(1998), and The Stream Within: Short Stories by ContemporaryBengali Women (1999), all of which deal with women’s spiritedstruggle with patriarchy. One remarkable feminist project edited bySusie Tharu and K. Lalitha was the two-volume anthology, WomenWriting in India (1993), which showcased women’s writing, asubstantial part of which is fiction, from 600 B.C. to the present.This project is also noteworthy as it had a specific translation policy,which is clear from the following:We have tried … in the translations (not alwayssuccessfully) to strain against … reductive andstereotypical homogenization … we preferredtranslations that did not domesticate the workeither into a pan-Indian or into a “universalist”mode, but demanded of the reader too atranslation of herself into another sociohistoricalethics.
