292 Translation ReviewFirstly, Rimli Bhattacharya does not explicitly state which version ofBinodini’s autobiographies served as her primary text. She writes,“This book is greatly indebted to the editors of the Bangla text ofBinodini’s selected works, Soumitra Chattopadhyay and NirmalyaAcharya”. But in the bibliography she also mentions Nati BinodiniRachana Samagra edited by Asutosh Bhattacharya. Now any readerwill not guess that there can be any difference in the main body ofthe text in this book and Amar Katha o Anyanya Rachana by thejoint editors. More so when Asutosh Bhattacharya says that in hersecond edition of her Amar Katha, Binodini does not make anyalteration to the text of the first edition, but merely added the Prefacewritten by Girish Chandra Ghosh and a dedication. But he goeswrong. Binodini did make some additions and Rimli Bhattacharyatranslated them. To avoid confusion, the translator should havementioned the name of the editor of the Bengali text she has used fortranslating.Now onto Rimli Bhattacharya’s translation. Binodini wasmade to come back to the Star Theatre due to the authority ofGurmukh Rai as the proprietor and the imploring of Girish ChandraGhosh. But this has been translated as “… it was only because ofGirish-babu’s concern for me and by virtue of his authority as ashareholder…”. When the Star Theatre was to be sold by GurmukhRai, he wanted Binodini to have half the share, if not actually be theproprietor. But this has been translated as “If Binod does not agreeto this…”, which is not the correct rendering of the original. RimliBhattacharya translates a speech of the play Chaitanya Lila as “InGaya I saw at Krishna’s feet…”. But we all know that it is notKrishna, but Vishnu who is worshipped at Gaya and Girish ChandraGhosh too correctly mentions it. ‘Antah Krishna Bahih Radha’ hasbeen translated as ‘Krishna within and Radha without’. This doesnot make sense. Binodini tells us that she used to faint whileperforming in Chaitanya Lila. She could continue only afterregaining her consciousness, but felt weak doing it. She adds that it
