Book Reviews 285regional languages, they face ‘pressure’ from English in India. Theauthor does it to show how being ‘bereft of translators oropportunities for translation can affect the wider “literariness” of alanguage’ even though it has huge number of users and rich literarytradition. The author stops his investigation there and refuses tomove further to find why there is a situation which is ‘bereft oftranslators and less opportunities for translations’, and whenever hedoes he conveniently blames it on the nation-state.In Cronin’s own words, ‘one of the recurrent themes of [thisbook] is the constant interaction between global and local’ and hetries to locate translation at the centre of this interaction as the‘missing link’ between the two. But throughout the book, the authorappears to be obsessed with ‘local’ and almost neglects and refusesto engage with the ‘global’, the major blind spot of this book is this. The persuasiveness of Cronin’s argument for the centralityhe seeks for translation to grapple with the question of identity, oneof the most contentious issues of contemporary society, can at bestbe considered as a strategy to draw the attention of both the publicand academia into translation, a much neglected but nevertheless afascinating and promising area of study.REFERENCENiranjana, T. 1992 Siting Translation: History, Poststructuralism, and the Colonial Context Berkeley, Calif.:University of California Press.Reviewed byAshokan Nambiar C.Central Institute of Indian Languages, MysoreEmail: asknbr@gmail.com
