DaraShikoh’s project required that he must ignore asymmetry andcultural specificity, but there were others who were only too awareof the pitfalls of such projects. An interesting example is providedby Mulla Badayuni who was ordained by Akbar to translate theRamayana into Persian. The mulla, a staunch believer, hated thecommand of the emperor, but had to carry it out, a task which acontemporary scholar has described as a kind of spiritualpunishment to him. Not only was it repugnant to his religiousbeliefs, he found the task of transposing a polytheistic worldview ona fiercely monotheistic one particularly daunting. The concept ofdivinity being shared by a host of gods and goddesses is not onlyunfamiliar in the Islamic worldview, but is a cardinal sin. There werefierce debates among scholars of translation as to whether it wasappropriate to translate Allah into Ishwar or Bhagwan, rasool intoavtar or yugpurush, Ram into Raheem, and so on, because in thesecases one was not simply translating Arabic into Sanskrit or viceversa but also making statements of equivalence between conceptswhose semantic universe was widely divergent and the culturaldifference that gave rise to such concepts almost unbridgeable.Faced with the royal command Mulla Badayuni did translate thesacred book all the while hating himself for doing the job. It willmake a subject of interesting research as to how he negotiated thisdichotomy between his translatorial ethics and the task at hand. Thisalso reminds one of the experiences of Eugene A. Nida, of theAmerican Bible society and a reputed translation scholar, about thedifficulty of translating the Biblical concept of trinity in cultures andlanguages that do not have this concept of Godhood.
