The interaction amongIndian languages would lend impetus to translation in Hindi becauseHindi touches major linguistic clusters barring the southernlinguistic cluster. This is what I would term as ‘Home and Abroad’approach to translational activities followed by ‘Home and Abroad’phenomenon which has plagued translational pursuits in India. Firstthere should be translation amongst sister languages of India andthen between Indian and non-Indian languages. Hindi, by virtue ofits leadership and demographic space covering more than fortycrores of people within India, would be the greatest beneficiary ofthis ‘Home & Home’ and then ‘abroad’ proposal of translationalpractice. 7NOTES1. The terms vad, anuvad and samvad are a variation of the title ofthe book Vad, Vivad aur Samvad by the noted Hindi critic,Namvar Singh. The title of the book is a creative translation ofHegelian dialectical terms: thesis, anti-thesis and synthesis. Inboth the cases the beginning and the end are the same though, inthe second and central stage anti-thesis and translation orsubsequent discourse occupy the central place in their respectiveparadigm. I consider samvad and synthesis to be reciprocalprocesses because synthesis is a consequence of dialogue.
