Dear Percussionists, Drummers, and Rhythm Fanatics,We’re so glad to hear that you’re interested in the <strong>Northwestern</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>Drumline</strong>! We are a proudsection of the <strong>Northwestern</strong> <strong>University</strong> “Wildcat” Marching Band dedicated to sharing precision andmusicianship with the Big Ten community and beyond. In addition, the NU <strong>Drumline</strong> is a large, closeknitgroup of friends brought together by their love of performance, rhythm, and marching percussion.Members come from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences, so all of the members of the linelearn a great deal from each other as musicians and individuals. Each person is very dedicated to thegroup and we can all testify to the invaluable and rewarding experience <strong>Drumline</strong> can be.Here’s a brief introduction to our leadership team, including our instructor and student drum captains:Andy Emerich (Instructor) is currently a Master's student in Percussion Performance at <strong>Northwestern</strong><strong>University</strong> where he studies with She-e Wu, James Ross, and Ruben Alvarez. He received his Bachelor ofMusic degree from the <strong>University</strong> of Texas at Austin where his teachers were Dr. Thomas Burritt, TonyEdwards, and Brannen Temple. His marching experience includes marching snare drum with theRevolution Drum and Bugle Corps, the Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps, the <strong>University</strong>of Texas Longhorn Band, and Surround Sound Percussion as well as performing in the Front Ensemblewith Element HPA. He is currently a performer with the Stampede, the drumline for the Chicago Bulls.He has also been a clinician and arranger for various high school programs throughout Texas andGeorgia.Justin Lueker (Co-Captain) comes from Portland, Oregon and is entering his senior year at<strong>Northwestern</strong>. He is double majoring in civil engineering and music composition. This will be hisfourth year playing tenors on the <strong>Drumline</strong>—he is excited to see if his back can handle one more year ofabuse. After college, he plans to work in the renewable energy industry (while composing awesomemusic on the side).Alex Dale (Co-Captain) comes from Los Angeles, California and is beginning his sophomore year. He iscurrently hoping to declare a Music Education major. He has played snare drum for a few years, alongwith other brass instruments and piano. He has marched Pacific Crest Drum and Bugle Corps and iscurrently marching The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps for the 2012 season. He is considering acareer in education.We’re all very excited to begin preparing for the 2012 season! You can audition for as many or as fewinstruments as you’d like – but please audition for all instruments for which you would like to beconsidered. In other words, those who audition only on snare drum will only be considered for thesnare line. Audition Requirements• Sign up for a 15 minute audition time on either May 24 or 25 by following the link atnudrumline.com. Sign up for one 15 minute slot per instrument that you would like toaudition for.• Group bass drum auditions will take place Friday May 25 at 8:00pm in Regenstein Hall.All bass drum auditioners must attend the group bass drum audition and sign up for anindividual audition time.• If you are unable to schedule a live audition, contact Andy Emerich to discuss analternative or consider submitting a video audition (see Video Audition Requirements).• Mark time during all exercises and etudes. This means “march in place”. Stand withyour feet together and parallel. Starting with the left foot on Beat 1 of every measure (instandard 4/4 time), lift the foot about an inch and press it into the ground on eachcount. The ability to mark time while playing is an important component of theaudition for all instruments.• Practice all audition materials with a metronome. During auditions, we may ask you toplay certain exercises with a metronome.• Try to achieve the written tempo for each exercise. During your audition, you shouldplay the exercises as close to the written tempo as possible while still playing accuratelyand musically.• Traditional grip is required for snare auditions.• For bass drum auditions, learn the Drum 2 parts for all split exercises. Also, learn allexercises individually (ignoring the splits).


Video Audition Requirements• Video auditions, whether mailed or sent electronically, must arrive by May 30.• Video auditions may be submitted only by those who do not live in the Chicago area.• All requirements listed in the “Audition Requirements” page apply for video auditions.Play all exercises with a metronome in your video.• The audition video must be in one take. You may try as many times as you like, but thefinal product must contain no cuts.• Video camera should be placed directly in front of you and far enough away so that wecan see both the top of your head and your legs. We should be able to clearly see yourhands and feet.• You must play on a real marching drum. No drum pads, concert instruments, etc. Ifthere’s absolutely no way you can obtain a marching instrument, contact Andy Emerichto discuss alternative solutions.• Videos may be emailed to Andy Emerich. You can also post an audition video online(YouTube, Dropbox, Google Video, etc.) and provide us with a link.• Include your name, return address, phone number, email address, and grade level.
