She was gone, itmattered little how. The main-stay <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> enterprisewas broken ;yet its inflexible chief lost nei<strong>the</strong>r heartnor hope. One path, beset with hardships <strong>and</strong>terrors, still lay open to him.
