xiiPREFACE OF THE FIRST EDITION.director of the Archives of the Marine and Coloniesat Paris, whose labors as an investigator ofthe maritime and colonial history of France canbe appreciated only by those who have seen theirresults. In the department of American colonialhistory, these results have been invaluable ;for, besides several private collections made byhim, he rendered important service in the collectionof the French portion ofthe Brodhead documents,selected and arranged the two greatseries of colonial papers ordered by the Canadiangovernment, and prepared with vastlabor analyticalindexes of these and of supplementarydocuments in the French archives, as well as acopious index of the mass of papers relating toLouisiana. It is to be hoped that the valuablepublications on the maritime history of Francewhich have appeared from hispen are an earnestof more extended contributions in future.The late President Sparks, some time after thepublication of his Life of La Salle, caused acollection to be made of documents relating tothat explorer, with the intention of incorporatingthem in a future edition. This intentionwas never carried into effect, and the documentswere never used. With the liberality whichalways distinguished him, he placed them at my
