UAV Roadmap 2002 – Section 2Current UAV ProgramsRQ-2 Pioneer/Pioneer UAVs, Inc./USMCWeight:Length:Wingspan:Payload:Ceiling:Radius:Endurance:452 lb14 ft17 ft75 lb15,000 ft100 nm5 hr2.1.3 RQ-5 HunterThe RQ-5 Hunter was originally a joint Army/Navy/Marine Corps Short RangeUAV program that the Army intended to meet division and corps level requirements. Ittakes off and lands (using arresting gear) on runways and can carry up to 200 lb for over11 hours. It uses a gimbaled EO/IR sensor, relaying its video in real time via a secondairborne Hunter over a C-band line-of-sight data link. Hunter deployed to Macedonia tosupport NATO Balkan operations in 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002. Although full rateproduction (FRP) was canceled in 1996, seven low rate initial production (LRIP) systemsof eight aircraft each were acquired, four of which remain in service: two for training, doctrine development, and exercise support, and two for contingency support. Acompetitively selected Extended Range/Multi-Purpose (ER/MP) UAV system will beginto replace it as early as FY05-06. www.redstone.army.mil/jtuavRQ-5 Hunter/TRW;IAI/ArmyWeight:Length:Wingspan:Payload:Ceiling:Radius:Endurance:1600 lb23 ft29.2 ft200 lb15,000 ft144 nm11.6 hr2.1.4 RQ-7 Shadow 200The Army selected the RQ-7 Shadow 200 (formerly Tactical UAV (TUAV)) inDecember 1999 to meet its Brigade level UAV requirement for support to groundmaneuver commanders. Catapulted from a rail, it is recovered with the aid of arrestinggear. It will be capable of remaining on station for 4 hours at 50 km (27 nm) with apayload of 60 lbs. Its gimbaled EO/IR sensor will relay video in real time via a C-bandLOS data link. Current funding allows the Army to procure 39 systems of four aircrafteach for the active duty forces and 2 systems of four aircraft each for the reserve forces.Approval for full rate production (acquisition Milestone C) and IOC occurred inSeptember 2002. The Army’s acquisition objective, with the inclusion of the ArmyReserve component, is 83 total systems. www.tuav.redstone.army.mil7
