Wear and testing• Upon possible damage (deformation because of accident or overuse) thedrawbar eye must be changed immediately.• Damaged or loose bushes must be exchanged in good time.• The max. wear of the inner diameter of the drawbar eye (with nominaldiameter of 40 and 50mm) is 1.5mm when using bushes.• New bushes must be mounted professionally.• Welding of bushes is not allowed.• When using drawbar eyes without bushes the max. wear of the innerdiameter is 2.5mm.• The wear of the height of the drawbar eye must not exceed 2.5mm (applyingto all designs of construction).• The tightening torque of the interchangeable drawbar eye must be checkedat least with each inspection of the vehicle.• If necessary, lubricate coupling pin and tow eye bush with oil (greasecollects road debris and accelerates wear).“Generally parts with dynamic strength of more than 30mm thickness of steelquality ST 52-3, before welding should be normalised at approx. 900degrees C, for the process of welding at approx. 250 degrees C treated andafter welding at approx. 600 degrees C annealed for releasing stresses(normalising by the manufacturer/ preheat in the welding department/annealing for releasing stresses can be cancelled without lessening thestress capacities). On welding the drawbar eye on the drawbar, the shaft of the drawbar shouldbe pre-heated with neutral Oxy-Acetylene-Flame to approx. 250 degreessC.”NZS5446:1987 Clause: 5.7• Protection for the towing eye shall be included in the drawbar design toprevent ground contact of the towing eye. Spring type drawbar support isrecommended.10

WeldingWeld-in drawbar eyes• The mounting of such drawbar eyes can be carried out by using differentwelding seams. All welding connections are to be performed according to theregulations of the manufacturers of drawbars, poles, towing rods and/orchassis and to be checked when vehicle is approved.• As minimum requirement for welding we recommend Y 42 20 (according toDIN 8559) when using inert gas, i.e. E 43 30 (according to DIN 1913) whenusing welding electrodes.• Extract of the original DIN 74053 and 74054:“Generally parts with dynamic strength of more than 30mm thickness of steelquality ST 52-3, before welding should be normalised at approx. 900 degreesC, for the process of welding at approx. 250 degrees C treated and afterwelding at approx. 600 degrees C annealed for releasing stresses(normalising by the manufacturer/ preheat in the welding department/annealing for releasing stresses can be cancelled without lessening the stresscapacities). On welding the drawbar eye on the drawbar, the shaft of the drawbar shouldbe pre-heated with neutral Oxy-Acetylene-Flame to approx. 250 degreess C.”40mm weld-in tow eye11
