The Student Incentive Grant Program — This program isprovided for residents of the state who demonstrate substantial financial need. Full-time undergraduate students at colleges and vocational schools are eligible to apply for thisassistance.The Tuition Equalization Grant Program — This programis for Georgia residents attending Georgia private collegesand universities. Residents of the state enrolled as full-timeundergraduate students at accredited private colleges anduniversities in Georgia are eligible to apply for grant assistance under this program.The Law Enforcement Personnel Dependents Care Program Dependents of killed or permanently disabledpolicemen, firemen, prison guards and other law enforcement personnel are eligible to apply for grant assistanceunder this program.The North Georgia ROTC Grant Program — Full-timeundergraduate students at North Georgia College in theArmy Reserve Officers Training Corps are eligible to applyfor grant assistance under this program.The North Georgia College Military Scholarship Program— Full-time undergraduate students exhibiting high academic merit, good character and leadership abilities areeligible to be recommended for award of this competitivescholarship (loan) by members of the Georgia GeneralAssembly. Under certain limited circumstances, such a scholarship may have to be repaid as if it were a loan.The State Direct Loan Program — Undergraduate andgraduate students are eligible to apply for a loan under thisprogram to attend postsecondary schools located within oroutside the state. Recipients of direct loans through theGeorgia Student Finance Authority may repay their loansin service if they complete an educational program in anoccupational area designated by the Commission as critically short of manpower. Other recipients repay their loansin cash at the applicable rate of interest.The Osteopathic Medical Loan Program — Residents ofGeorgia who elect to attend an eligible college or universityof Osteopathic Medicine may be eligible for a loan from theAuthority. Awards are based on financial need. Funds arerepayable by practicing primary care Osteopathic Medicinein a medically underserved area in Georgia, or otherwise incash plus interest.Student assistance programs administered by the GeorgiaHigher Education Assistance Corporation include:The Guaranteed Student Loan Program — The GeorgiaHigher Education Assistance Corporation guarantees loansmade to Georgia students by banks, savings and loan associations, credit unions and other eligible lenders who participate in the loan program.The Plus Loan Program — The Georgia Higher EducationAssistance Corporation guarantees loans made to parentson behalf of their dependent undergraduate son or daughter, to independent undergraduate students and to graduateand professional students. Simmons, Division Director, Guaranteed LoansDEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATIONThe Department of Transportation (DOT), which consistsof the State Transportation Board, the Commissioner ofTransportation, the Deputy Commissioner of Transportation,the State Highway Engineer, the Treasurer and the AssistantTreasurer of Transportation, and such subordinate employeesas the Commissioner deems necessary, is responsible for planning, designing, managing, constructing and maintaining astate highway system. Further, the DOT has jurisdiction andcontrol over the construction and maintenance of all roads andbridges on the state highway system, though its responsibility islimited for those portions lying within the corporate limits ofmunicipalities. The Department is responsible for planning,and in many cases constructing, air, water and rail transportation systems in a manner that assures their complementing eachother. The DOT has jurisdiction overall state and federal fundsappropriated for highway purposes except those state fundsrebated directly to counties from the state motor fuel tax.General funds are granted directly to cities through the DOTbudget.Members of the State Transportation Board, comprised ofone representative from each congressional district of the State,are elected by the General Assembly for five year terms in themanner prescribed by the OCGA 32-2-20(b).
