Product Information96How to lay a patioNo matter what your project or materials you are using, if you have decided to do it yourself there are a number offactors you need to be aware of and important steps you need to take.Here are some examples of the steps required to cover the most basic patio paving installation.If you need any further information on out products or installation call our Customer Services Team on0845 60 80 570 or email landscaping@brett.co.ukSTEP 3: Preparing the Mix and LayingPaving FlagsWhen preparing the cement mix, pleaseavoid direct handling of cement, alwayscover your skin.Either using the cement mixer orwheelbarrow and shovel, prepare amortar mix of 5 parts building sand, 1part cement and add water to create adoughy consistency.To check this is correct use the ‘snowball’ test, pick up a handful of mortar mixand squeeze into a ball, when you let gothe mix will retain its shape withoutoozing water or falling apart.Remember when lifting and carryingpaving units always consider the weightbefore attempting to lift. If it is heavy,get help. Take care not to trap fingerswhilst handling paving units.Lower the first paving flag into position,holding it diagonally will make it easier tolower it. Settle it cleanly into the mortarwithout sliding it about so a good bondforms between the mortar and paving flag.Materials and Tools ChecklistThe key to starting off this style ofproject is the equipment, correct toolsand materials for the job and havingthem all close to hand. Quantities ofthe following materials will varydepending on the size and sub-baserequirements of your patio.Materials•Sub-base Material (MOT Type 1)•Brett Building Sand•Cement•Washed Sharp Sand•Paving Flags97Before you start…Draw a simple plan of your home and garden,sketching where you would like areas to bepaved. Once your plan has been finalised, layout lengths of string to mark out thedimensions of your purposed patio inposition. When you are happy with this, letthe digging commence.STEP 1 : Site PreparationMark the pegs beforehand to indicatethe depth and remember to allow for agradual slope away from your property.Using the tape measure mark out thepatio area. Check the corners, using abuilders square. Removing topsoil iseasily done using an edging iron andcutting the turf into manageablesquares. Simply scoop with a spade andremove using a wheelbarrow and skip.Hints & TipsArrange for materialto be stacked on adry base and allowenough room formixing concrete andmortarIf you find soft spots in the soil,further excavation may be required.These spots can then be filled andconsolidated with sub-base material.Check all 90° corners and depthsthoroughly before putting down thesub-base materialSTEP 2: The Sub-BaseHaving tipped the sub-base materialinto the laying area, rake into positionto a consistent depth of 100mm or 4inches.Once the area is covered, check thedepth using a spirit level, pegs andstring line.Compact the area using a VibratingPlate Compactor, making sure theentire area has been compressed atleast twice. Check again for any sinkingareas. If this occurs, an extra depth ofsub-base material should beconsidered.Starting in the corner, trowel a bed ofmortar to cover the area intended for thefirst paving flag. The depth of the mortarbed should be approximately 35-40mm.Level off but ensure the mortar is notcompact as you want the flag to sitwithin the mix about 10-15mm deep.STEP 4: CuttingGreat care is needed and it is essentialto use equipment specially designed forthis operation. Diamond disc cutterswith water suppression are ideal.They are readily available at your localequipment hire store.Line up the paving flag with the stringlines and gently tap it into the mortarusing the rubber mallet.Repeat the process, continuouslychecking against the string line. Also, usethe spirit level to check the surface is atthe correct level.Check that no edges are standing upproud simply by running your hand overthe joints. Ensurethat the edge restraint unit that is tobe placed on the foundation will sit atthe required finished level using thestring line and spirit level.The edge restraint can either be a kerbunit of a thick paving block (at least60mm). Mortar these units into thefoundation using the trowel and rubbermallet and again using the concrete,form a haunch up at least half the blockheight.STEP 4 : InstallationRemember when lifting and carryingpaving units, always consider theweight before attempting to lift. Only products of50mm or more are suitable for drivewayinstallation.CONSIDERATIONS FOR CONCRETE PRODUCTSEfflorescence: Efflorescence is a temporarysalt residue that can occur on all concreteproducts in their initial life. The salt masks thecolour of the product and is often mistaken forfading. The best course of action is to leave thepaved area to weather over time andefflorescence will usually disappear.Differential Curing: Dark patches occasionallyappear on the surface of garden products. Thisis known as Differential Curing and is caused byvarying moisture levels within the flag drying atdifferent rates. Like efflorescence, given timeand the natural weathering process suchpatches will tone down and become less visible.Porosity: Concrete continues to cure for manyyears after manufacture. Whilst this happens,and usually only during its initial life, a level ofporosity may exist where some product retainswater giving a damp appearance. This willdisappear as the concrete continues to hardenand the product dries out.Aggregate contaminants: Very rarely concretemay be affected with Iron Pyrites and/orLignite. These are both the result of naturallyoccurring constituents within the product rawmaterials which may result in localiseddiscolouration of the surface of an individualunit. This phenomenon willnot normally affect the performanceof the product.Sealants: Sealers can help protect and enhanceyour investment. Before you choose to buyone, make sure you are aware of the following.Sealers may trap potential efflorescence andother forms of discolouration that can occurfrom time to time, making them almostimpossible to remove. We recommend you wait12-18 months before sealing. This will allowany potential discolouration to be exposed andenable you to remove it. Before sealing, makesure that the paving is thoroughly cleaned andany joints are filled. Prior to applying to thewhole installation, test in a small inconspicuousarea.Surface marking: Some products within therange are deliberately distressed via a tumblingprocess in order to give them their agedaesthetic. Tumbling can leave a dust on thesurface of the product that should significantlyreduce with the natural ageing process.The instances mentioned above are notcovered under any product guarantee providedby Brett. Products may have 2 or 3 differentpigments added to create the subtle and veryattractive colour tones. Overall these variationsare more uniform.Tumbling: Products that are tumbled, such asAlpha and Aura, have been distressed withvarying production techniques. The distressingprocess by its very nature creates a randomaesthetic. Minimising the numberof batches will help reduce product variation.Products should be laid from a number of packsat the same time. In the case of paving threepacks should be mixed for single colours, five inthe case of multi-coloured product. Ideally,product should also be mixed by being takenfrom vertical stacks rather than in layers of thesame pack.Any garden products supplied may incur jointwidths of differing sizes depending on thepattern they are installed in.We recommend they are dry laid to check theproduct fits the required area before they areactually bedded.
