Everything –from steel production to shipping of finished, high-classproducts – takes place within 485 metres. This gives ustotal control and a unique opportunity to quickly adapt tothe customer’s requirements.Scana Steel Björneborg ABScana Steel Björneborg produces steel with a total alloycontent of up to 12%, meeting the specifications ofnational standards such as ASTM, B.S., DIN, AFNORand S.S.. Production is an integrated chain including thecompany’s own steelworks, a forge shop, heat treatmentand several well-equipped machining units. The company’s customers are dominant players in theirmarket areas who have stringent requirements regardingspecifications and quality. Scana Steel Björneborgexports 70% of its turnover. Europe is the largest market, but exports also go to the USA as well as to other partsof the world.ProductsScana Steel Björneborg supplies products to the marine, energy and industrial sectors. The main products are forged, rotation‐symmetrical, long and slender componentswith a high technical content. We also supply raw forgedand semi-finished billets. The company’s main productsare shafts, rotors, risers and joints, as well as forged steelfor tool manufacturers, and the sizes vary from a few tonnesup to 45 tonnes machined weight.Scana Steel Björneborg supplies components with differentdegrees of completion, depending on the customer’srequirements, and also a number of different steel grades. The products are often key components for the customers. The company emphasizes research and development tofurther enhance the quality of its products.

Quality assuranceOur quality system is certified according to ISO 9001:2008 by Norske Veritas (DNV). All the stages of manufacture arecontrolled to meet the quality standards set for each product. There is a strict adherence to the quality plan for production, which incorporates mandatory manufacturing instructions, marking and calibration necessities and inspectionsurvey requirements. Quality engineering involves the determination of steel grade, heat-treatment procedure, extent ofinspection, forging design, machining requirements etc.Manufacturing instructionsThe stages of production are governed by rules coveringall essential parameters such as pouring temperatures, forging temperatures, forging ratios, heat treatmentand temperatures.Instructions are issued for all grades and standard processes.Special instructions are issued for orders requiringcompositions or procedures deviating from the standards.Marking and calibrationThroughout the production line a marking system isused that assures the identity and traceability of theproducts. Furnaces and inspection tools are subject tocalibration routines.InspectionInspection is in accordance with specifications from thecustomer or in-house standards. Dimensional inspectionis carried out on the forged part as well as on the roughand finish machined product. Among the non-destructiveinspection procedures, ultrasonic examination is mandatoryat Björneborg forge. Liquid penetrant and magneticparticle examinations are also frequently used. Heatstability testing in a special furnace is also used to checkan axle’s straightness at a high working temperature. The mechanical testing includes tensile tests at roomand elevated temperatures and impact tests at low temperatures.Fatigue and creep tests may also be included.Advanced new CTOD (Crack Tip Opening Displacement)testing equipment gives us an excellent facility for measuringa material’s fracture toughness. Metallographicexaminations such as micro-structure grain size andmicro inclusion determinations are applied when required. The chemical analysis is determined for each heat. Theequipment comprises optical spectrometer, carbon andsulphur analyser and instruments for hydrogen and nitrogenanalysis.
