Mikron Blackbody RadiationCalibration SourcesMikron has been designing and building blackbodycalibration sources since 1970. These precisioninstruments have been installed in several nationalstandards institutions, and are used across industryand research for the calibration of infrared thermometers, radiometers, heat flux meters, thermalimaging systems and spectrographic analyzers. Our parallel manufacture of infrared thermometersand thermal imaging systems has contributedmuch to Mikron’s knowledge and expertise in thefield of infrared radiometric measurement. Thisexpertise is embodied in the ground-breakinginnovation and breadth of product performancedescribed in the following pages. The sequence of products in this catalog isbroadly arranged in ascending order of maximumsource temperature, with overall capability from–40° to 3000°C, but also includes models whichare distinguished by their portability or someunique feature, other than temperature range. In addition, we have included descriptions ofspecial purpose, custom designed models forwhich Mikron is noted, such as large area sources, sources for airborne application and for use invacuum environments. All our blackbody calibrationsources, whether standard or custom, aredesigned for the highest emissivity possible, commensurate with emitter size and cavityconfiguration; excellent emitter surface uniformity;and superior accuracy. After testing and a burn-inperiod, accuracy is determined radiometrically, with NIST traceable certification where applicable. In a separate, but related, blackbody calibrationsource category, the catalog also describesMikron’s unique family of fixed temperature,Freezing Point of Metal sources. These high precisioninstruments provide calibration assurancehitherto only obtainable from National StandardsInstitutes. In combination with our M190 seriesof Calibration Transfer Standards, also described,Mikron is able to provide the industrial userand researcher with a complete hierarchy ofcalibration traceability, from working units in thefield, through secondary and transfer standards toprimary, Freezing Point Standards.MIKRON M340–20.0°C to 150.0°CThe M340 is a portable blackbody calibration sourcecovering the range from sub-zero to 150.0°C with 0.1°Cresolution. M315X/345XLarge area low temperature blackbody source.Large Area Calibration SourcesThe large area, flat sources have been designed for use incalibrating thermal imaging systems, aerial mapping andsurveillance equipment and long path spectrophotometers. They have emitter in size from 100x100mm to 300x300mmand place special demands on the designer in regard toemissivity and uniformity. Most of these systems haveincluded peltier effect cooling to reduce the time taken tochange the source temperature in laboratory or field use. Please see a separate brochure for details.Custom ModelsThe blackbody calibrator specifications in this catalogdescribe standard, production instruments used routinelyin industrial process, aerospace and research environments. However, with the increasing application of infraredmeasurement technology in the electronics, medical, military and other demanding fields, the need for specialblackbody sources has grown commensurately. Mikronhas been able to respond to even the most esoteric requirements, including airborne systems, ultra large area sources,ultra-high resolution calibrators and systems to operate in avacuum. One selection of these non-standard instrumentsfor vacuum operation is illustrated here and we will bepleased to receive your specifications with a view tooffering a proposal to meet your special requirements.Calibration Sources forVacuum OperationWhere calibration must take placein a vacuum environment or wherethe source is being used to simulatea condition such as would beencountered in outer space,Mikron has expertise which can beemployed to solve the uniqueproblems of maintaining structuralintegrity and providing forcedcooling under such conditions.VacuumblackbodysourceCalibration Traceability andTransfer StandardsIn order to establish the degree of uncertainty in carrying out acalibration procedure, it is essential to establish calibrationtraceability of the equipment being used to NationalStandards. This is achieved through a hierarchy of primary andsecondary transfer standards, with the national standards institutesat the top of the tree. The devices which provide theM190Precision Transfer Standardtraceable links between national or “primary” standards andthe working units in the fields are know as “transfer standards”.Transfer standards consist of Mikron Model M190-TS infraredtemperature measuring instruments which are accurately calibratedagainst the primary blackbody source and are containedin a specially designed case. These instruments are tobe used only for calibration purposes, and should be returnedto Mikron for checking at 12-month intervals.
