STUDENT ATHLETES REACH NEW HEIGHTSMatt Goedke ’09 Meghan Rockrohr ’08Spring of 2008 saw the men’s tennis andwomen’s soccer teams reach great heights. Atthe same time, senior Mitchell Ericksonliterally vaulted to great heights.Following his state championship in 2007,Oklahoma-bound Erickson turned in aneffort of 16-3 in the pole vault to finishsecond in the IHSA state meet this year. After a regular season highlighted bywinning the Marian Invitational, the Spartanwomen’s soccer team earned the #6 seed inthe Lincoln-Way Central Sectional and begana brilliant post-season run.Marian avenged an earlier ESCC loss torival Joliet Catholic to open regional play, then stunned #1 seed Lincoln-Way Centralto capture the regional crown. The Spartansthen knocked off #4 seed Lincoln-Way East, before eventually bowing to Homewood-Flossmoor in the sectional championshipmatch.“The season will be one I will neverforget,” sixth-year coach Nasser Shahtajisaid. “I can still picture the happy faces ofmy players after winning the regional bydefeating #1 seed Lincoln-Way Central. Ihad a good feeling about this season whenour players, led by senior captain KaseyCartwrights, and the guidance of myassistant Marvin Rodas, decided to entirelySAVETHEDATEcommit themselves to this season. I am veryproud to coach these young women whoproved, as the Adidas ad says, ‘nothing isimpossible.’ ”For the first time since 1980 and thesecond time in school history, the Spartantennis team advanced all four entries to theIHSA state tournament. Led by repeatsectional singles champion Tim Stanis ’08,Marian captured second place in its ownsectional. The Spartans were also representedat state by junior singles player MattGoedke, senior doubles team Eddie Semik-Sean Daley and juniors doubles tandemBrandon Tilton-Enyi Okebugwu. TimStanis ’08, senior class Valedictorian, wasalso named East Suburban CatholicConference singles player of the year andposted a 3-2 record at the state tournament.Softball moved to the brink of a hugemilestone – 600 wins – as an East SuburbanCatholic Conference championship and firstIHSA regional crown since 2005 left theprogram at 599-279 all-time. The diamondSpartans concluded the year at 29-6.The women’s track squad continued its runof IHSA state qualifiers, as sophomoreTahsha Mitchell represented the Spartans atstate in the high jump. The Nineteenth Annual Marian CatholicENDOWMENT GOLF CLASSICwill be held onMonday, August 18, 2008at Idlewild and Ravisloe Country Clubs.Information about golf or sponsorships may be obtained bycontacting Janet Noth (708-755-6579 or jnoth@marianchs.com).Endowment golf drawsveterans, young alumsWhen the Marian CatholicEndowment Golf Classic tees off for the19th time on Monday, August 18 atIdlewild and Ravisloe Country Clubs, the field of more than 200 golfers willinclude quite an array of personalities. Some alumni and friends haveparticipated in the event for nearly twodecades! At the same time, younger alumni, establishing themselves in the businessworld, have made the Classic a popularvenue for contacts and to re-establishfriendships while enjoying a day awayfrom the office.“It is a lot of fun to hear old storiesfrom the people who first played in thisevent,” according to Bob Gromala ’97,E.G.C. Committee Member. “I have alsolearned a lot from those people. It hasbeen great for networking andunderstanding what resources there areout there not only for the future of theevent, but even on a professional level.”In some respects, the event has becomeanother unofficial Marian CatholicReunion for many friends who only seeone another annually.“It is great to see the passion to helpMarian form the players in this event. Itis almost like a private club. The ticketsare limited...it is so much fun. It is oneof the most lucrative fundraisers I haveever been involved with, and with greatprizes, great food, for a great cause,”Gromala added.“As a young alum, it gave me a chanceto give back in a fun and rewarding way.I look forward to it every year. I wouldalso not be able to play at these great golfcourses if it were not for this event. Thevalue you get, especially as a young alum, cannot be matched.”While The Courage to Lead CapitalCampaign has brought some major andimmediate enhancements to Marian’scampus on the threshold of a 50thAnniversary celebration, the EndowmentClassic remains a model of consistencyfor fund-raising and friend-raising.Each year, co-chairs Greg Underwoodand Mark Peifer ’81, and Classicparticipants, help to benefit MarianCatholic through student scholarshipendowments. To date more than$1 million has been posted to the E.G.C.scholarship fund.“There is nothing said that when youraise money for a great cause, that youshould not have any fun,” Gromalanoted. “The 9-hole scramble in themorning has become a fiercecompetition, which is a great start to theday. This event is a blast and I will bepart of it as long as I can!”6

Class of 1988 Reunion Committee members meet and encourage their classmates toattend their 20 Year Reunion on September 5. From left to right sitting: Tina DeLuca-Caruso, Jane Carlson Dempsey, Erin Clark Nair, Julie Vasilopulos Brady, Michelle Paetow; From left to right standing: Tom Dempsey, Jim Nair, Sean Brady, Patrick FanningNEWEST REUNION IDEA SPURRED BYCYBERSPACE – by Tim O’Hea ’63, Founding Four Committee MemberHave you ever heard of a high school reunion that has gone on for 9 months24 hours a day, 7 days a week? How about a reunion that you can attend in yourpajamas? Well MCHS classes of 1962 and 1963 have just such a reunion currentlyin progress thanks to the wonderful world of email. It was all started in the late summer of 2007 by my good friend Ed Brown ’62 whohad about 10 classmates, one of which was my wife Mary Ann (Ormsby) O'Hea’62, on his personal email list. Ed's thought was to somehow generate interest inhis class’ 50th reunion by updating Marian's list of their classmates with better ormore current information. He obtained the list from the alumni office and thensplit it up among 8 classmates. He had them each try to contact, either by letteror email, everyone on their lists. He also used the website “peoplefinders.com” tolocate classmates who were not on the list. What ultimately developed was a list of about 50 or 60 classmates who beganto reconnect through their emails. There was a very strong group of about 10 orso who were from St. Joe’s in Homewood who began conversing on an almostdaily basis and began to share photos and stories from their grade school and highschool years. No one knows exactly how the idea of sharing their bios began, but Iassume that when a new classmate joined the reunion someone asked what he orshe had been doing since high school and they wrote back with a story of their lifesince graduation. Then it just exploded from there. When I saw how much fun Mary Ann was having, I decided to see if I couldget my class of 1963 interested as well. The initial list of classmates’ emails that Istarted with was about 90. After my initial invitation to join this email reunionwent out we had about 65 who were interested in participating. Some classmatesdidn’t want to participate or didn’t want their email accounts to get clogged andthat was understandable, so we eliminated their names. What most people seemto like about this reunion is that they don't have to think about losing weight orbuying new clothes to attend.I cannot possibly express the myriad of emotions that these bio’s have generatedamong the alumni in our 2 classes. They have run the gamut from hysterical toheartwarming to heartbreaking. One of the difficult things that we learned wasthat we (class of 1963) had lost 23 classmates from an original class of 190. RoyCarlson ’63 sent out an incredible tribute to a very close friend and classmateDenny Rehberg ’63 who passed away a few years ago. A few classmates in distantstates have found that they live only a few miles from each other and didn't realizeit. Others have shown a tremendous amount of courage while dealing withadversity. This has been a lot of fun and not nearly as much work as you might imagine.Once you have a pretty good list of your classmates and send out an initialinvitation, it’s just a matter of getting everyone to “respond all” so that all on thelist are included. Aside from the pleasure of reconnecting with high school friends,I think that the biggest benefit of this email reunion will be the quality of thetime that we will spend together at the Founding Four Reunion on September12 & 13.If this sounds like something that you might want to begin for your class, Irecommend it highly. It will give you a chance to rekindle some friendships, maybe begin a few new ones, and make the next time that you all gather togethermuch more meaningful. Cheers! The alumni office is committed to facilitate alumni contact andwould welcome your call 708-755-6579 or alumni@marianchs.com. 7IT’S THAT TIME AGAIN!ANOTHER MILESTONE IS FAST APPROACHING…We would like to invite you back to Marian to renew oldacquaintances and celebrate friendships, passages and memories!• Founding Four Class of 1962, 1963, 1964 & 1965:September 12 & 13• Class of 1968, 1973, 1978 & 1988: September 5 & 6• Class of 1983, 1993, 1998 & 2003: September 26 & 27Reunion committees have been working hard to locate and contact all classmates.
