X. Thermal Solutions Water heater Control TM (TSBC TM )A. INTRODUCTION - The intent of this section is to briefly summarize the controllers capabilities, familiarize the user withits basic features and to list the factory supplied default settings. Read the additionally supplied Factory Instruction Manualfor the TSBC to learn more about the controllers features and capabilities.1. Thermal Solutions Water heater Control OverviewThe Thermal Solutions Water heater Control (TSBC) is a complete water heater monitoring and automation system. The TSBC provides advanced water heater modulation, operating control, diagnostics, multiple water heater lead-lagand auxiliary device control. The TSBC provides advanced control features in an easy to use package.2. Flexible, Field Selectable ControlControl modes, water system, water heater auxiliaryand modulating lead/lag control features are menuselectable without the need for external programmers, lap tops or down loads. Every water heater isshipped with factory defaults that make field menuselections unnecessary unless you are applying additionalcontrol features.3. Water heater Monitoring and Diagnostic DisplaysThe TSBC's two line by sixteen character LCDdisplay may be used for monitoring water heaterinlet and outlet, remote system and outside air temperatures, modulation rate setpoint and modulatingpercent and mixing valve demand percent. Additionally, the display automatically presents waterheater sequence messages, alarms, hold and lockoutmessages. A diagnostic menu is included that providesthe last 10 alarm messages and water heaterinlet temperature alarm history. Water heater inlettemperature alarm history includes time and date, the lowest inlet temperature reached and the amountof time the water temperature dropped below thealarm setpoint.4. Modulation Rate and On/Off ModesThe TSBC may simply control water heater modulationand on/off output based on the water heaterwater outlet temperature and an operator adjustedsetpoint. However, using parameter selections, theTSBC allows the water heater modulation and on/off output to respond to remote system water andoutside air temperatures, Domestic Hot Water Priority(DHWP) input or Energy Domestic Hot WaterPriority (EMS) modulation rate demand, remotesetpoint or remote start/stop commands. Parameterselections of remote system water temperature andremote mode determine the choice of one of six differentcontrol modes.5. Advanced AvailabilityThe above control modes are menu selectableoptions. However, if a selected sensor fails, theTSBC automatically changes to a control modethat will allow continued automatic operation of thewater heater. For example, in the event of a remotesystem temperature sensor failure, the TSBC willautomatically switch to water heater outlet temperaturesensor based control.6. Outdoor Air ResetWhen selected the modulation rate setpoint is automaticallyadjusted based on outside air temperature.Outdoor air "reset" setpoint saves fuel by adjustingthe water temperature of a heating water heaterlower as the outside air temperature increases.7. Warm Weather Shutdown (WWSD)Some water heaters are used primarily for heatingbuildings, and the water heaters can be automaticallyshutdown when the outdoor air temperature iswarm. When outside air temperature is above theWWSD setpoint, this function will prevent the waterheater, water heater pump and/or the system pumpfrom starting.8. Domestic Hot Water Priority (DHWP)Some water heaters are used primarily for buildingspace heating, but also provide heat for the domestichot water users. When the outdoor temperature iswarm, the outdoor reset setpoint may drop lowerthan a desirable domestic hot water temperature. When enabled and a DHWP contact input is detected, the hot water setpoint is adjusted to be greaterthan a field adjustable DHWP Setpoint.9. Water Side Control OutputsIn order to maximize the life and availability of ahot water systems it may be desirable to automatemixing valves, water heater pumps, system pumps, and standby system pumps. The TSBC makesthis type of automation totally integrated and costeffective. The control of these devices is field selectablethrough simple yes/no menu selections.10. Combustion Air Side Control OutputsWater heater room Combustion air dampers (freshair dampers) and Vent Inducer control outputs arefield selectable options.11. Peer-To-Peer NetworkThe TSBC includes state-of-the-art modulatinglead-lag sequencer for up to eight (8) water heaterscapable of auto rotation, outdoor reset and peer-topeercommunication. The peer-to-peer network is48
FRONT PANEL DISPLAYNOTE: Although some TSBC menus show as “Boiler” controls, the TSBC is equally capable of being configuredfor water heater control using the same parameters with sometimes differing settingsB.
