VI. ElectricalDANGERPositively assure all electrical connections are unpowered before attempting installation or serviceof electrical components or connections of the water heater or building. Lock out all electricalboxes with padlock once power is turned off.WARNINGFailure to properly wire electrical connections to the water heater may result in serious physicalharm.Electrical power may be from more than one source. Make sure all power is off before attemptingany electrical work.Each water heater must be protected with a properly sized over-current device.Never jump out or make inoperative any safety or operating controls.The wiring diagrams contained in this manual are for reference purposes only. Each waterheater is shipped with a wiring diagram attached to the front door. Refer to this diagram and thewiring diagram of any controls used with the water heater. Read, understand and follow all wiringinstructions supplied with the controls.A. General. Install wiring and electrically ground waterheater in accordance with authority having jurisdictionor, in the absence of such requirements, follow theNational Electrical Code, NFPA 70, and/or CSA C22.1Electrical Code.B. A separate electrical circuit must be run from the mainelectrical service with an over-current device/disconnectin the circuit. A service switch is recommendedand may be required by some local jurisdictions. Installthe service switch in the line voltage “Hot” leg of thepower supply. Locate the service switch such that thewater heater can be shut-off without exposing personnelto danger in the event of an emergency. Connect themain power supply and ground to the three (3) waterheater wires (black, white and green) located in thejunction box at the back of the water heater jacket.C. Refer to Figures 15 and 16 for details on the internalwater heater wiring.D. When installed, the water heater must be electricallybonded to ground in accordance with the requirementsof the authority having jurisdiction or, in the absenceof such requirements, with the National Electric Code,ANSI/NFPA70 and/or the Canadian Electrical CodePart 1, CSA C22.1, Electrical Code.NOTICEThis water heater is equipped with a high water temperature limit located inside the internal wiringof the water heater. This limit provides water heater shutdown in the event the water heaterwater temperature exceeds the set point of the limit control. Certain Local Codes require anadditional water temperature limit. In addition, certain types of systems may operate at temperaturesbelow the minimum set point of the limit contained in the water heater.If this occurs, install an additional water temperature limit (Honeywell L4006 Aquastat) located inthe system piping as shown in the <strong>Water</strong> Piping and Trim Section of this manual. Wire as indicatedin the Electrical Section of this manual.27
