<str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pferde <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> weltausstellung 2010model for a stalli<strong>on</strong> until he is at least four years old. Stalli<strong>on</strong>s whoare four or older develop <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir masculine appearance and a str<strong>on</strong>gerphysique due to horm<strong>on</strong>es. These young stalli<strong>on</strong>s currently in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ring appear to be young ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r than masculine and dominant like <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>older stalli<strong>on</strong>s we saw earlier, but <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y will develop more with eachpassing year.I would like to acknowledge <strong>on</strong>ce again in this c<strong>on</strong>text that I’mproud that we’re here in Tyrol and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se stalli<strong>on</strong>s both come from<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tyrolean Associati<strong>on</strong>, raised in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> old style, as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y were 100years ago or even 10,000 years ago – naturally and in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir herd. Not kept separately or fed individually, no training, no preparati<strong>on</strong>,but kept within <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> herd itself. Even during <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> show <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se two stalli<strong>on</strong>swere kept behind in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stable with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir herd. We d<strong>on</strong>’t wantto make <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m feed individually in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> shows envir<strong>on</strong>ment, so insteadwe allow <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m to c<strong>on</strong>tinue <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir natural upbringing. We wantto leave <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> herd, discover who <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> lead stalli<strong>on</strong> is, whichhorse asserts itself best against nature. A horse that cannot assert<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>mselves in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> herd is not a champi<strong>on</strong>.A loser within <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> herd will never have <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> strength to bring ournext generati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> horses where we want to go. Only stalli<strong>on</strong>s thatprevail within <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> herd, stalli<strong>on</strong>s that develop bey<strong>on</strong>d that, that growand <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n flourish when trained for tasks – <strong>on</strong>ly <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se can give us arespected progeny line.Let us not be distracted by a pretty face, let us not allow <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> beauty<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> nature to cloud our judgement; we must see through <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> make upand select <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> horse that will become a champi<strong>on</strong> out <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> nature. Andthose are naturally raised young stalli<strong>on</strong>s.The last two are <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> champi<strong>on</strong> and reserve champi<strong>on</strong> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> category<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> three year old stalli<strong>on</strong>s. Here we have true breeding stalli<strong>on</strong>s withsome more masculinity, though <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y still appear young, and stillhaven’t developed to where <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y likely will in time. The horse that has been selected for champi<strong>on</strong> stalli<strong>on</strong> as well asoverall youth champi<strong>on</strong> is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> Walzertraum, here seen asnumber 80.This stalli<strong>on</strong>, as I said yesterday, is simply phenomenal! At <strong>on</strong>e anda half years <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> age, this stalli<strong>on</strong> broke two <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his cervical vertebrae;he was lame and couldn’t stand <strong>on</strong> his own. But despite this setback,we didn’t give up <strong>on</strong> him. We brought <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> horse to a clinic in Munichand tried to heal him for two m<strong>on</strong>ths; it worked. There is a cervicalvertebra a hand’s width away from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> spinal column, protrudingunder <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mane; <strong>on</strong>e can see a vertebra completely <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>f to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> side, but <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> horse doesn’t have any indicators <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> lameness, doesn’t showany handicap, and has even g<strong>on</strong>e so far as to be selected champi<strong>on</strong>here. He is living pro<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> that <strong>on</strong>e can’t just give up, but must believein <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> impossible. Often a little too much medicine is better thantoo little, but <strong>on</strong>ly when dealing with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> health <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> horse and notunfair competiti<strong>on</strong>. This belief paid <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>f for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> Walzertraum, bred by Hermann Gruber from Kolsassberg. Best wishes to HermannGruber for your best <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> class stalli<strong>on</strong>! You were probably notthrilled in February during <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> inspecti<strong>on</strong>s, when this stalli<strong>on</strong>placed third, but today or yesterday he was named champi<strong>on</strong>,not just <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his category but <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> all youth stalli<strong>on</strong>s. One realises thatin a short time, small changes are possible. But that is also a goodsign that not just a single ideal stalli<strong>on</strong> exists, but ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r several. TheTyrolean inspecti<strong>on</strong> winner placed third, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> inspecti<strong>on</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d place178winner remained in sec<strong>on</strong>d place, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> inspecti<strong>on</strong> third place winnerbecame <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> champi<strong>on</strong>; an internal shift within just a few m<strong>on</strong>ths.I believe that this shows successful breeding, not yielding singleproducts but ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r several different ideal models. In sec<strong>on</strong>d place is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> youth reserve winner Stilt<strong>on</strong>. This stalli<strong>on</strong>was bred by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pfausler family from Roppen and he stands at studin Imst at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> stati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Engelbert Posch; he just may beNabucco’s successor. His progeny must first be proven. But when<strong>on</strong>e also examines <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mare families, who are counted am<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>world’s best, when <strong>on</strong>e looks at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> charm, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> facility <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his ancestry,<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n <strong>on</strong>e realises that this stalli<strong>on</strong> has a successful future inbreeding, even if or better because <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> he was named sec<strong>on</strong>d placewinner here. Abba and Davos, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mo<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se two young stalli<strong>on</strong>champi<strong>on</strong>s, are also success stories.Thank you for presenting <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se young stalli<strong>on</strong>s to us; I now invite<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m to exit <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ring. It is also interesting, ladies and gentlemen, when <strong>on</strong>e sees that in 1970 (forty years ago), <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> was in<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> public meaning <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> number <strong>on</strong>e horse breed in Austria. But thiswas probably just public percepti<strong>on</strong> and not actual fact, since ourstatistics show that in 1970 <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re were 3000 <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g>s in Austriaand 5000 Noriker horses. Today we are about equal in strength <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>numbers; in 1990 <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re were more <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g>s than Noriker horses.Only <strong>on</strong>e breed, that has been <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> str<strong>on</strong>gest breed in Austria for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>last 50 years, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breed that was thought to be threatened by extincti<strong>on</strong>,and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> smaller breed – this is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world horse breed.Sometimes attitudes, opini<strong>on</strong>s or percepti<strong>on</strong>s aren’t exactly correct, especially when gouverment support occur as a result <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m.And with that we come to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> next category: stalli<strong>on</strong>s.Here <strong>on</strong>e can see <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> full force <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> champi<strong>on</strong>ship horses – <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> future,<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> present, but naturally also with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se older stalli<strong>on</strong>s, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> past.We have here in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ring all four categories <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> champi<strong>on</strong>s and
