<str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> weltausstellung 2010And last but not least, from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> B-line, which is a great joy for meas breeding director, to see an example from such a rare bloodlinemaking it to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> final ring: <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> Bergdorf. This stalli<strong>on</strong>, born to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mare Delina here at Fohlenh<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>, is a symbolfor what breeders can accomplish when supported by breeding associati<strong>on</strong>s:support <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> rare bloodlines by going to stalli<strong>on</strong>s that maynot be exceedingly popular at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> moment but who possess goodgenes and crossing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m with quality mares to ensure that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> rarebloodlines gain popularity. Bergdorf (mountain village in english):a beautiful name for a beautiful stalli<strong>on</strong> and I wish <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> best to all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>mares who were bred to him this seas<strong>on</strong> and I’ve heard <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re weremany <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> very best success with breeding and we expectmany beautiful foals next year al<strong>on</strong>g with a rebound in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> B-line.While <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong>s exit <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ring, I want to return to something thatwe’ve already touched <strong>on</strong>, namely <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> desired size. Over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> lastseveral decades this was a dominant <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>me in breeding debates, andnow we’ve finally reached <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ultimate size that we want. In 1897,Major Graf Huyn wrote that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> should be between 150and 160 cm tall, so before 1900 <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> was about 145 cm to155 cm large, since <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> height was taken in tape measurement ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stick. In 1963 at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> beginning <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> internati<strong>on</strong>al expansi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> breed, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> average height as notated in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stud bookwas 134.8 cm. In 1972, ten years later, it was 135.4 cm and in 1985at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> beginning <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> my positi<strong>on</strong> as breeding director, it was 138.3cm. Twenty-five years ago <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> was <strong>on</strong> average about 2centimeters smaller than today’s minimum measurement and morethan 15 centimeters smaller than <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> horse at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> beginning <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>breed’s definiti<strong>on</strong>. As we reach an average <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 147 cm in 2010, weare actually at exactly <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same spot that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breed began back whenit was first established in 1900. This is a part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> our success and anachievement <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> our l<strong>on</strong>g-term goals, that via purebreedingwe’ve returned to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sizes that we hold as ideal. The next presentati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> our captivating <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>World</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Show</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2010are <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> young mare champi<strong>on</strong>s. Since we’ve just been discussingheight measurements, perhaps I should tell you more about <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sizes<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> yearlings. Yearlings measure <strong>on</strong> average 133.5 cm in March, which has remained fairly c<strong>on</strong>stant. In 2007, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> average was 133.5cm, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same in 2008, 10 mm more in 2009 and this year <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> averagewas 133.7 cm. Points also remain approximately <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same and fairlyc<strong>on</strong>stant each year as well (73.5). In 2007, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 200 yearlings reached73.88 points <strong>on</strong> average, in 2008 <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> average was 73.71 points, 2009was 73.83 and this year was 73.82 points; remaining within a 0.15point range over four years as an average taken from thousands <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>judged yearlings, means c<strong>on</strong>sistently each year. Breeders d<strong>on</strong>’t haveto worry that year to year will be more difficult or easy, or that lastyear was very easy or next year nearly impossible; <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y can dependeach year <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> exact same appraisal and maintenance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> judging. This year <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> appraisals were under extreme c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s since <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>preselecti<strong>on</strong>s occurred simultaneously; in <strong>on</strong>e day 60 yearlings in<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> morning and 90 in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> afterno<strong>on</strong> (a total <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 150) were appraised, measured, branded, described, photographed, and given a chip.Even this is possible and still al<strong>on</strong>gside a c<strong>on</strong>stant estimati<strong>on</strong> wi<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>qual points. Now joining us are <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> yearlings, two year olds and three year olds, beginning with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> yearlings. The Jordan family with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> champi<strong>on</strong><str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pferdeyearling Helianne dem<strong>on</strong>strates <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> exemplary Newstyle progenywith lots <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> charm and glamour, with a w<strong>on</strong>derful light forehand.Look at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> line <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this young filly, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fr<strong>on</strong>t and back legs, howdry <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fundament is not just in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> champi<strong>on</strong>, but throughout <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ring: <strong>on</strong>e sees <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> joint b<strong>on</strong>es and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> tend<strong>on</strong>s and a shadow between<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m. Not an ounce <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> overhang, not <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> slightest indicator<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a heavy fundament, but dry, light and fine: exactly what we’rehoping for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> breed <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> future. C<strong>on</strong>gratulati<strong>on</strong>s to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>Jordan family for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir champi<strong>on</strong> yearling. But also look at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sec<strong>on</strong>d place filly, Frijana from Rabl Sebastianfrom Wörgl in Tyrol, <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fspring <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Novembernebel. She is alsoa beautiful model: see <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> lightness here as well, perhaps lacking amore expressi<strong>on</strong>-filled face but that may still develop in this yearling.Thank God, that in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> presentati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> young horses, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>irdevelopment is not yet realised; <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y are still young. Frijana is a verymodern, glamorous, fine horse. Then we come to my t<strong>on</strong>gue-twister <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last three days, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> youngmare Nobilie. I think I’ve said <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> name Nobile about 20 times over<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last three days, though I will be sure to make note <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this namefor <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> future since we will almost certainly see and hear more froma young reserve winner <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this quality. Nobilie has a very brightfuture ahead <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> her; she hails from Gut Hochreit and is an <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fspring<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Aghai, a line seen very seldom at this world show because <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>stalli<strong>on</strong> Aghai was not entered with his progeny, but ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r has beenseen <strong>on</strong>ly through this mare he bred. I d<strong>on</strong>’t think <strong>on</strong>e could possiblywant for a better forehand, neck, shoulder and wi<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs line. The fundament is also fine: dry and elegant. She also dem<strong>on</strong>stratesmuch promise and hope that she c<strong>on</strong>tinues to develop in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> way that<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> judges anticipate. A two year old, still developing, is exactly <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ideal champi<strong>on</strong> horse for me pers<strong>on</strong>ally, because all <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> possibilitiesin <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world remain open. The proporti<strong>on</strong>s do not yet line up toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r quite right – namely, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rounding and harm<strong>on</strong>y have to come toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> femininity hasto still develop – but <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is still time for that and this horse willstill improve. I am willing to bet <strong>on</strong> this, because this horse is notyet fully developed and shows much potential. C<strong>on</strong>gratulati<strong>on</strong>s toGut Hochreit. Then behind <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m from Dietmar Schneider hailing from Höchstin Vorarlberg is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> young mare Mandela, who we nearly forgot orrated incorrectly according to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> list for today’s presentati<strong>on</strong>, whois also an <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fspring <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Novembernebel. C<strong>on</strong>gratulati<strong>on</strong>s to him.I’m fairly certain that when he purchased this foal, he didn’t expectthis run <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> success; <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> foal wasn’t even allowed to be entered for<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ebbs aucti<strong>on</strong> because she was such a late born filly in Maywhich excuses her a little. Too under-developed, she was a smallfoal with slight visual imperfecti<strong>on</strong>s which will be less noticeablein <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> future. To protect <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> foal, that did not look properly thattime as it could and to be sold <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>refore at a low price <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> foal wasnot allowed in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> aucti<strong>on</strong>. But <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> filly has made her way and isnow reserve winner and for that I wish to sincerely c<strong>on</strong>gratulateDietmar Schneider, <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most motivated breeders in Vorarlberg. We are happy to see Salzburg and Vorarlberg represented as<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first and sec<strong>on</strong>d place winners in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ring, representing twobreeding regi<strong>on</strong>s that have l<strong>on</strong>g bel<strong>on</strong>ged to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tyrolean associati<strong>on</strong>.C<strong>on</strong>gratulati<strong>on</strong>s to both breeders.181
