The manual Number<strong>System</strong>s, GC20-1618, contain information on hexadecimal numbering.Prerequisite reading for this publication is <strong>IBM</strong> <strong>System</strong>/ 7 <strong>System</strong> Summary, GA34-0002.Information on customer interfaces to <strong>the</strong> I/O modules (analog, digital, and 2790 Control)appears in <strong>IBM</strong> <strong>System</strong>17 Installation Manual—Physical Planning, GA34-0004.This manual has been organized so that each chapter forms a module within <strong>the</strong> entire manual.Each chapter has its own front cover, table of contents, and page and figure numbers. A mastertable of contents appears at <strong>the</strong> beginning of <strong>the</strong> manual, and a master index is included at <strong>the</strong>end of <strong>the</strong> manual.The modular presentation gives <strong>the</strong> user an option of using this manual in its published format,or of using <strong>the</strong> chapters in combination with information from o<strong>the</strong>r sources. That is, it may bedesirable to insert one or more chapters from this manual into ano<strong>the</strong>r publication.The name of <strong>the</strong> manual appears at <strong>the</strong> foot of each left-hand page; <strong>the</strong> title of <strong>the</strong> chapterappears at <strong>the</strong> foot of each right-hand page. The user who separates <strong>the</strong> chapters shouldfind this arrangement helpful for retrieving and reorganizing <strong>the</strong>m.Examples of data and instruction formats used throughout <strong>the</strong> manual give <strong>the</strong> binarybit settings and <strong>the</strong>ir equivalent hexadecimal values. Bit positions that can be set by <strong>the</strong>program or programmer are denoted by an X. Bit positions that are not used by a particulardata or instruction format are denoted by *.
