Numeric, alphabetic, special character, or logical information can be represented by<strong>the</strong> bit values in a word, as determined by <strong>the</strong> combination of <strong>the</strong> bits in a word and <strong>the</strong>intention of <strong>the</strong> programmer who organizes <strong>the</strong> program and data in storage.Numeric Data Formats for Arithmetic OperationsNumeric computations in <strong>the</strong> <strong>System</strong>/7 are performed in binary arithmetic by <strong>the</strong> arithmeticinstructions. The value of bit 0 (<strong>the</strong> high-order bit) of a word specifies whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>word represents a positive or negative number as shown in Figure 2-4. This bit is called<strong>the</strong> sign bit.
