Students will be admitted pending available space.Independent StudyOpportunities for credit-bearing Independent Study are available tomatriculated students with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher who wishto explore areas of a discipline not covered in the normal curriculum.Independent Study is not available to non-matriculated students.The intention of Independent Study is to expand a student’s learningexperience beyond the normal program curriculum. Therefore, anIndependent Study cannot be taken in lieu of any course existing in anyof <strong>NHTI</strong>’s catalogues. Students wishing to pursue existing <strong>NHTI</strong> courseson an independent basis should consult the <strong>NHTI</strong> policy on DirectedStudy.Students wishing to take advantage of an Independent Study opportunitymust consult with a supervising faculty member to prepare aproposal detailing the specific learning outcome(s) to be pursued, thespecific learning activities that will occur, and the specific forms ofassessment and evaluation that will be used to determine the final grade.In addition, the proposal should indicate the number of credits requestedfor the Independent Study (usually 1-2 credits). The Independent StudyProposal Form is available from the Academic Affairs Office and theRegistrar’s Office.The student must obtain the following signatures as indicated onthe form: the student’s Department Head; the faculty member who willsupervise the learning experience; the Department Head of the supervisingfaculty member; and the Vice President of Academic Affairs. Gradingof Independent Study projects will follow the standard <strong>NHTI</strong> policiesand procedures.Exceptions to the above policy require approval from the DepartmentHead and the Vice President of Academic Affairs.Name and/or Address ChangesIn order that all <strong>NHTI</strong> correspondence reach students, up-to-datenames and addresses must be on file. Name and/or address change formsmay be obtained in the Registrar’s Office, completed as appropriate, andreturned to the Registrar’s Office.Prerequisite and Corequisite CoursesMany courses at <strong>NHTI</strong> are dependent upon knowledge learned inpreceding courses. <strong>NHTI</strong> requires that students pass all listed prerequisitecourses prior to proceeding with courses for which there are prerequisites.Prerequisite courses may be waived only with the prior approval ofthe head of the department in which they are taught. Such a waiver doesnot, however, suggest that those prerequisite courses need not be taken,but only that credit for them may be gained at a subsequent time.Corequisite courses are those that must be taken concurrently (atthe same time) with another course, as listed in a particular course description.(Note that with departmental permission, a corequisite coursemay sometimes be taken in advance of the course for which it is acorequisite.)Program Residency RequirementsTo be eligible to receive an <strong>NHTI</strong> degree, a student must satisfactorilycomplete a minimum of 16 credits of course work in <strong>NHTI</strong>-controlledcourses with at least half of these credits in last semester majorfield courses. Exceptions to this policy require the approval of the VicePresident of Academic Affairs and the Academic Standards Committee.Repeated CoursesA student may repeat a course for credit one time. Registration forfurther repetitions of the same course will require permission from amatriculated student’s Department Head or, for a non-matriculated student,from one of the college’s academic advisors. The student’s CumulativeGrade Point Average will reflect the most recent course and resultinggrade, even if the most recent grade is lower than previousgrades; however, both courses and corresponding grades will appear onthe student’s transcript. In addition, students wishing to repeat a courseshould consult with the Financial Aid Office to re-assess their continuingFinancial Aid eligibility status.Scholastic HonorsDean’s ListNew Hampshire Technical Institute publishes a Dean’s List at theend of each semester. It includes the names of all full-time studentswhose Grade Point Average (GPA) for that semester is 3.3 or higher.Students who achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.7 or higher are graduatedwith high honors, and those who achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.3 to3.69 are graduated with honors. Cumulative GPA will be calculated usingall courses taken at <strong>NHTI</strong>.Vice President’s Award for AcademicExcellenceThe Vice President’s Award for Academic Excellence is presentedeach year at the May Commencement to the student(s) achieving thehighest overall cumulative Grade Point Average in the graduating class.The following criteria apply for this award only:1. A minimum of 48 credit hours must be used in the calculationof the cumulative GPA;2. All students are eligible for the award, including those who haveexercised Academic Amnesty (see page 7), those who have changedprograms, and those who have previously graduated from an<strong>NHTI</strong> program;a. For purposes of this award, students who have previouslygraduated from an <strong>NHTI</strong> program will have their GPAcalculated using courses taken in the new program and anyprior courses that may be applicable in the new program;b. Students who have exercised the Academic Amnesty optionwill have their GPA based only on courses taken after theoption has been exercised. No previous courses will be used;c. Students who have changed majors will have their GPAcalculated on the basis of all courses taken at <strong>NHTI</strong> and notjust those in the new program.Transcript RequestsTranscripts of students’ <strong>NHTI</strong> grades are available from the Registrar’sOffice. Requests must be in writing and may be faxed (603) 271-6431 -Attn: Registrar) or mailed to the Registrar’s Office. Requests must includethe following information:1. Name while attending <strong>NHTI</strong>;2. Social security number;3. Program of study at <strong>NHTI</strong>;4. Dates of attendance and/or graduation;5. Address where you would like the transcript sent;6. Student’s signature must accompany written request.Each student is entitled to two (2) free transcripts. Additionaltranscripts cost $3.00 each. Should the student request that a transcriptbe faxed, the additional cost will be $5.00 per transcript. There is no feefor a student transcript issued from one New Hampshire <strong>Community</strong>Technical <strong>College</strong> to another.Please note: transcripts will not be issued if a student has a past duebalance on his/her account or if the student is in default on student loanpayments.82

Class schedules and final grades are no longermailed. Class schedules, mid semester warning grades, final grades, accountinformation, financial aid status, and academic history may beobtained by logging on to <strong>NHTI</strong>’s home page at www.nhti.edu.Contact the Registrar’s Office at (603) 271-7142 with questionsregarding the Student Information System or to request official gradedocumentation.Transferring to Other InstitutionsDepartment Heads and the Career Counseling and Placement Officeassist students who wish to continue their education at other colleges oruniversities. A number of formal and informal articulation agreementsexist and some are specific to particular majors. While some of theseagreements are listed by major in the “Programs of Study” section of thiscatalog, students who plan to transfer to other colleges or universitiesshould meet with their Department Head, the Director of Career Counselingand Placement and the affiliated institution for advice and assistance.Please see specific academic program pages for listings of institutionswith which <strong>NHTI</strong> has current affiliations.DisclaimerTransfer policies vary from institution to institution. The receivingcollege or university has sole discretion in determining the credits to beawarded. Students should not make assumptions about which credits aretransferrable even if an articulation agreement exists. Whether a studentis transferring into or out of <strong>NHTI</strong>, it is the student’s responsibility tocontact the appropriate person at the receiving institution in order todiscuss their policy, learn what documentation is required and, finally, todetermine and confirm transferrable credit.Underenrolled Day Classes<strong>NHTI</strong> reserves the right to cancel a class that it deems underenrolled.Students are advised that occasionally a day class may be cancelled forinsufficient enrollment, and students will be asked to attend that sameclass, if it is also available in the evening, through the Division of ContinuingEducation. However, <strong>NHTI</strong> recognizes its obligation to runcourses in the semesters indicated in the program curriculum section ofthe catalog. Therefore, <strong>NHTI</strong> will not cancel a day class unless the sameor a comparable course is available in the same semester in the evening.Withdrawal from <strong>NHTI</strong>Should a matriculated student find it necessary to withdraw from allcourses at <strong>NHTI</strong>, the Registrar must be notified in writing or by receivingan Institute Withdrawal Form from the student.An exit interview with the Associate Vice President for EnrollmentManagement is requested. Such withdrawal is subject to the same academicpolicy as applies to dropped courses. If such withdrawal occurs atthe 60% or later period, the student is subject to the same academicassessments and actions as students completing the semester.Students who have officially withdrawn in good standing may applyfor readmission by writing to the Director of Admissions and will requireno action by the Academic Standards Committee.83
