The allocation of creditsis normally according to the following formula:One credit represents a) one hour of classroom work per week; orb) two or three hours of laboratory per week; or c) three to five hoursclinical experience per week for a semester.Credit-By-ExaminationIn certain instances a student who has been accepted into a degreeprogram may present evidence that would suggest that he or she may beeligible to receive credit for a course or courses either through aggregateeducational experience or through some combination of occupationalexperiences. In such cases, an application for a credit-by-examinationmust be made within the first two weeks of a semester and be approvedby the student’s Department Head. The head of the department offering the course will assign a facultymember who will discuss the subject area to be tested with the studentand administer the test. A fee is required from the student for eachexamination administered under this policy. The fee is $25.00 per credithour. The credit-by-examination will be comprehensive in nature.Grades for credit-by-examination will be either “pass” (E grade) or“no pass,” with full course credit granted for a grade of “E” (pass). Astudent receiving a grade of “no pass” in an examination representing arequired course will be required to satisfactorily complete that course.Prior to 2005 students who passed a credit-by-examination were issueda “P” grade.A student who has previously received a failing grade in a course (orless than “C” for transfer) may not request credit-by-examination in thatcourse. See Program Residency Requirement, p. 82.Credit for Experiential LearningCredit for experiential learning is available only through the Associatein Science in General Studies program. If a matriculated student inthis program receives credit for experiential learning and later transfersto another NHTI degree or certificate program, that student must completethe required courses in the new program or take the appropriatecredit-by-examinations. Exceptions to this policy may be made throughconsultation with the specific department head involved and the approvalof the Vice President of Academic Affairs.Academic ProgressAny student whose academic progress is deemed less than acceptableby his or her department may be referred to the Academic StandardsCommittee. The Committee includes: the Vice President of AcademicAffairs, who chairs the Committee; an elected representative of each ofthe academic divisions; the Vice President of Student Affairs; the AssociateVice President for Enrollment Management; and the DepartmentHead of the department in which the student is enrolled. The Directorof Counseling, the Registrar, and the Director of the Learning Centerserve in advisory capacities. The Committee considers all pertinent aspectsof each individual case and recommends action to be taken by theVice President of Academic Affairs. That action may involve, but is notlimited to, a warning, academic probation, suspension from a specificprogram or from the Institute as a whole for a specified period of time, conditional probation or dismissal. Dismissal is permanent. All credit courses, regardless of the grade received, are used for thiscalculation. Students entering with advanced standing should add theirtransfer credits to those credits earned at the Institute to determine theirpositions in the guidelines. In addition, any matriculated student registered for two or morecourses during any semester will be subject to review by the AcademicStandards Committee.Academic WarningsAt mid-semester, Academic Warnings are formally issued by facultyto students with grades of “C-” or below, “NP” or “PP.” Warnings aresubmitted by faculty to the Registrar’s Office from which formal midsemesterwarning letters are mailed to students.Warnings may also be issued at any time during a semester whendeemed appropriate by faculty.Academic ProbationAcademic Probation usually will last for one semester only. Thestudent’s Department Head will recommend to the Committee if a studentcan take courses in their major field during the Academic Probation.Students placed on Academic Probation may be eligible to continue receivingfinancial aid if they meet the minimum GPA requirements. Toensure that adequate academic progress toward a degree is being made, the Institute also uses the following guidelines in determining whichstudents are automatically brought to the attention of the AcademicStandards Committee:Total Credits Minimum AcceptableAccumulated Grade Point Average0 — 13 1.514 — 27 1.728 — 40 1.841 or more 2.0SuspensionSuspension may be for any period of time established by the AcademicStandards Committee, but must be for a minimum of one semesterexcluding the summer semester (unless the summer semester is requiredby the student’s program). A matriculated student suspended from aprogram may not take major field courses during the suspension in eitherthe Day Division or the Division of Continuing Education. Non-majorfield courses, however, may be taken in either division at NHTI.
