It features 16,000 square feet of multi-use spaceincluding a great room, lounge space, games area and conference roomsand will be the hub for social, cultural, entertainment, and recreationalactivities for the <strong>NHTI</strong> campus. It will also be the new home for a varietyof student services offices including: campus clubs and organizations;health and counseling services; campus activities and community service;residence life; and career and job placement.Orientation ProgramNew Hampshire Technical Institute has a unique orientation programto facilitate a smooth transition to college life. Students and theirfamilies have the opportunity to ask questions, to meet current students,alumni, faculty, and staff and become familiar with college organizations,activities and services.Residence LifeResidence living is an integral part of the total educational experienceat <strong>NHTI</strong>. Every effort is made to provide opportunities for personalgrowth and development in a safe, secure and clean living environmentconducive to the academic and personal development of the student.Moving into the residence halls of <strong>NHTI</strong> represents the first timemany of our students have lived away from home. The residence life staffis available to help students adjust quickly to their new environment.<strong>NHTI</strong> has three coeducational residence halls housing a total of 314students. Each hall has a full-time professional Residence Director and astaff of Resident Assistants. The resident assistant staff is selected fromsuccessful second year students and receives training in all areas of studentdevelopment from fire and safety concerns to peer counseling.Assignment to housing in a <strong>NHTI</strong> residence hall is open to anystudent who carries a six credit class load for the academic semester. It isthe policy of <strong>NHTI</strong> that any student who signs a residence hall contractmust maintain that residence for the full academic year. Additionally,students living in the residence halls are required to purchase a meal planfrom <strong>NHTI</strong>’s food service.Service Learning<strong>Community</strong> Service touches the classroom, through New HampshireTechnical Institute’s commitment to Service Learning. Service Learningis the infusion of a community service project into the curriculum ofa course, to enrich educational experience and to provide meaningfulservice to the community. A Service Learning Team, comprised of students,faculty and staff assists with the development of such courses andprojects.The college must ensure that individuals at service learning sites arenot adversely affected by students during such learning experiences. Therefore,students participating in service learning experiences must demonstratethe emotional stability required to exercise sound judgement, acceptdirection and guidance from a supervisor or faculty member, andestablish rapport and maintain sensitive interpersonal relationships withemployees, customers and clients. During the 2003-2004 Academic Yearover 140 students participated in Service Learning at <strong>NHTI</strong> through fourdisciplines.The growth of community service initiatives at New HampshireTechnical Institute demonstrates the college’s commitment to fosteringparticipation in the life of the community.Student Clubs and OrganizationsA student activity period is scheduled from 12 -2 p.m. on Tuesday of eachweek to provide time for students and faculty to participate in clubs andactivities of special interest. The Senate is composed of elected representativesfrom all academic departments and is responsible for the promotion andcoordination of student activities. The Student Senate President sits onthe <strong>College</strong>’s Institute Leadership Team.Professional OrganizationsMost academic programs have professional organizations that promoteintegration into chosen fields of study.Each association has elected officers and a planned agenda for theyear. Whenever possible, these groups meet regularly during the academicday. These associations provide an opportunity for student/faculty-plannedprograms which provide supplementary and educational information.Phi Theta Kappa - International HonorSocietyPhi Theta Kappa is the only internationally acclaimed honor societyserving two-year colleges offering associate degree programs. Phi ThetaKappa seeks to recognize and encourage scholarship among students,develop opportunities for leadership, fellowship and services, as well asprovide an intellectual climate for continued academic excellence. Thename of <strong>NHTI</strong>’s chapter is Alpha Upsilon Omicron.Students need to complete 12 hours of college study at <strong>NHTI</strong> witha 3.5 minimum grade point average to be eligible for membership.76
