Students may request assistance in academic strategiessuch as managing time, organizing course materials, taking lecturenotes, learning from textbooks, and performing well on tests and exams.Assessment TestingAll students who enroll in programs at <strong>NHTI</strong>, whether they plan totake courses full-time or part-time, are required to complete assessmenttesting prior to registering for classes. Non-matriculated students whohave been away from school for several years or are unsure of their skillsare also encouraged to take assessment tests.Students are assessed in the areas of writing, reading comprehension,math, and study strategies. Test scores are used to help studentsidentify their academic strengths and challenges, and to assist studentsand their advisors in course selection.Career ExplorationStudents interested in career planning and job search techniques canuse Choices Career Exploration software to assist in determining careerchoices based on their interests, aptitudes, and work values. Choicessoftware helps students research careers in interest areas, search for fouryearschools into which they can transfer, and look for jobs on the Internet.A career resource library and guidelines for writing job search letters andresumes are also available.Computer Learning LabStudents have various types of software available to assist them intheir coursework, including computer-assisted software to refresh skillsin math, the sciences and all areas of reading and writing, and improvetyping. Through computer tutorials and practice exercises, students learnat their own pace while receiving immediate feedback. Students findthese programs helpful in preparing for classes, reinforcing lessons, andbrushing up on academic skills. Many of the programs are also availablevia the Web from students’ homes.The lab has Microsoft Office XP (Word for word processing, Excelfor spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentation software) and Internetaccess for students to use in completing assignments such as PC Applicationlabs. During weekday and early evening hours, lab monitors areavailable to assist students in the use of all software. Workshops on thesetopics are also offered at various times during the year.sion and/or opportunities for academic success. Students whowish to receive academic accommodations must provide documentationof the disability, which may include recommendations for accommodations,to the Coordinator of Disabilities Services. Softwarethat magnifies text, reads text displayed on the screen, and writes textdictated by students is available for students with disabilities. Studentswith disabilities who choose not to disclose a disability are not eligible forDisabilities Services.Math LabMath instructors and professional tutors are available on a drop-inbasis during weekday and early evening hours. Math tutors help studentsdecipher and learn from math texts, improve math study skills, decodemathematical symbols, hone problem solving skills, understand how touse formulas, create and interpret tables and graphs, use scientific calculatorsand graphing programs, and prepare for math quizzes and tests.Chemistry, Physics, and Accounting tutors are available during selectedday and evening hours.TutoringTutoring programs at <strong>NHTI</strong> include open tutorials, group studysessions, and peer tutoring. Group learning and peer support are effectiveways to increase learning and student confidence.
