The dental assistantmust possess knowledge of procedures and practices in patient care,laboratory work, and office management. The one-year Dental AssistingProgram emphasizes clinical training in the campus clinic and in privatedental offices. A Diploma in Dental Assisting is awarded followingsuccessful completion of the program. Graduates are able to find employmentas Dental Assistants in private practices or in institutions. I graduatedon Saturday and started a new job on Monday.”Specific Admission RequirementsPreference will be given to applicants whose applications are completeand received by the <strong>NHTI</strong> Admissions Office no later than February3, 20<strong>06</strong> for Fall 20<strong>06</strong> admission (with the exception of the interview).1. A course in high school science (biology or chemistry), orthe equivalent, must have been completed with a minimumgrade of “C”;2. An informational group interview with the Dental AdmissionsCommittee is required;3. Observe professional practices in a dental office for a periodof not less than twenty hours prior to first-time enrollment;4. Be in good physical and mental health in order to qualifyfor the program.Health, Character and Technical Standards, see page 48.Use of Computers in the Allied DentalEducation ProgramsAllied Dental Education students will be using computersthroughout their programs. Faculty will be instructing them inthe application of dental software, as well as the use of conventionalsoftware to generate papers, do oral presentations andspreadsheets. To make this process easier for students, it isstrongly recommended that they have a good working knowledgeof computers before entering the program. Computer literacycourses, such as IT 102, are available through the college.HEALTHThough this curriculum is designed to be completed in the format listed, students may choose to take more time, depending on their individualcircumstances. Students who anticipate taking more time to complete the program are strongly encouraged to consult with their department head at thetime of registration each semester to ensure that prerequisite requirements are met and course selection is appropriate.37
