The goal of the program is for students tounderstand the interrelationship tourism plays with the local, state andglobal economy. Students have the opportunity to explore the variouscareer avenues they may take in the tourism industry. Growth within theindustry continues at a good pace with good starting salaries and benefits.Tourism professionals prosper with rapid career advancement.At <strong>NHTI</strong>, emphasis is placed on elements of tourism: transportation,accommodation, destination geography, attraction, and food andbeverage management. Computer technology (Microsoft Office andWorldspan), sales, marketing, customer service and communication techniquesare also studied.Travel and Tourism majors have the opportunity to participate invarious travel experiences. Site and hotel inspections are required toexamine the tourist/business opportunities of the destination. Internshipsare encouraged to gain experience in the tourism industry. This trip gave students theopportunity for classroom education and to experience the culture ofSpain. Upon return from the trip, students completed a “familiarizationpacket” designed to analyze their experiences. Past trips haveincluded Bermuda and cruises to the Bahamas, St. Martin and St.Thomas.24Though this curriculum is designed to be completed in the format listed, students may choose to take more time, depending on their individualcircumstances. Students who anticipate taking more time to complete the program are strongly encouraged to consult with their department head at thetime of registration each semester to ensure that prerequisite requirements are met and course selection is appropriate.
