The medical, biological and pathological aspects as wellas the physical and technical aspects will be discussed. The roles andresponsibilities of the radiation therapist, the treatment prescription, thedocumentation of treatment parameters and delivery will also be discussed.RTH 115 Patient Care 1-0-1Content is designed to provide the student with foundation concepts andcompetencies in assessment and evaluation of the patient for servicedelivery. Psychological and physical needs and factors affecting treatmentoutcome will be presented and examined. Routine and emergency careprocedures will be presented.RTH 150 Medical Imaging and Processing 2-0-2Content is designed to establish a knowledge base in factors that governand influence the production and recording of radiographic images forpatient simulation, treatment planning and treatment verification in radiationoncology. Radiation oncology imaging equipment and related deviceswill be emphasized. Content will also include quality managementprograms and continuing quality improvements in radiation oncology.(Prerequisites: RTH 110 and XR 180)RTH 190 Clinical Practice I 0-16-3Content is designed to provide sequential development, application, analysis, integration, synthesis and evaluation of concepts and theories inradiation therapy. Through structured sequential assignments in clinicalfacilities, concepts of team practice, patient-centered clinical practiceand professional development will be discussed, examined and evaluated.(Prerequisites: RTH 101 and RTH 110)RTH 195 Clinical Practice II 0-16-3A continuation of Clinical Procedures I designed to provide sequentialdevelopment, application, analysis, integration, synthesis and evaluationof concepts and theories in radiation therapy. Through structured sequentialassignments in clinical facilities, concepts of team practice, patient-centeredclinical practice and professional development will be discussed, examined and evaluated. (Prerequisite: RTH 190)RTH 200 Radiation Protection and Biology 3-0-3Content is designed to present basic principles of radiation protectionand safety for the radiation therapist. Radiation health and safety requirementsof federal and state regulatory agencies, accreditation agencies andhealth care organizations are incorporated. Specific responsibilities of theradiation therapist are discussed, examined, performed and evaluated.Content also includes basic concepts and principles of radiation biology. The interactions of radiation with cells, tissues and the body as a whole, and resultant biophysical events, will be presented. Discussion of thetheories and principles of tolerance dose, time dose relationships, fractionationschemes and the relationship to the clinical practice of radiationtherapy will be discussed, examined and evaluated. (Prerequisites:RTH 101, XR 180 and RTH 150)RTH 205 Treatment Planning 3-0-3Content is designed to establish factors that influence and govern clinicalplanning of patient treatment. Encompassed are isodose descriptions, patient contouring, radiobiologic considerations, dosimetric calculations, compensation and clinical application of treatment beams. Optimal treatmentplanning is emphasized along with particle beams. Sterotactic andemerging technologies are presented. (Prerequisites: RTH 101 and RTH110)RTH 210 Principles and Practiceof Radiation Therapy II 3-2-4Content is designed to examine and evaluate the management of neoplasticdisease using knowledge in arts and sciences, while promoting criticalthinking and the basis of ethical clinical decision making. The epidemiology, etiology, detection, diagnosis, patient condition, treatment and prognosisof neoplastic disease will be presented, discussed and evaluated inrelationship to histology, anatomical site and patterns of spread. Theradiation therapist’s responsibility in the management of neoplastic diseasewill be examined and linked to the skills required to analyze complexissues and make informed decisions while appreciating the character ofthe profession. (Prerequisites: RTH 101 and RTH 110; corequisite:RTH 205)RTH 215 Sectional Anatomy and Pathology 3-0-3Content is designed to study normal sectional anatomy via diagrams andradiologic images.
