GV90+ gas-fired water boiler — Boiler ManualStart-upFigure 71 Freeze protection guidelinesFreeze protection (when used)Follow these guidelines to prevent possibilityof severe personal injury, death or substantialproperty damage:NEVER use automotive or standard glycolantifreeze, even glycol made for hydronicsystems. Use only freeze-prevention fluidsrecommended by Weil-McLain for applicationin GV90+ Boiler systems.Thoroughly flush any system that hasused glycol before installing the new GV90+boiler.Review the material safety data sheet(MSDS) for the fluid used with the boilerowner and leave a copy for reference. TheMSDS contains information on potentialhazards and first aid procedures for exposureor ingestion.Check antifreeze inhibitor level at leastannually. Glycol concentration and inhibitorlevels may change over time. Add antifreezeto increase concentration if necessary. Addinhibitor as needed to bring to acceptablelevel, using inhibitor test kit to verify. When using freeze protection fluid with automaticfill, install a water meter to monitorwater make-up. Freeze protection fluid mayleak before the water begins to leak, causingconcentration to drop, reducing the freezeprotection level.DO NOT exceed 50% antifreeze by volume.Antifreeze moves more sluggishly than waterand can interfere with heat transfer. Atantifreeze concentrations higher than 50%,sludge can develop in the boiler, potentiallycausing damage to the heat exchanger.Clean the system before filling. Alwaysdrain and flush the system thoroughly beforefilling with antifreeze. Sludge, iron oxidedeposits and other sediment in the systeminhibit flow and can cause rapid breakdownof inhibitors.Eliminate all system leaks. Continual fresh makeup waterwill reduce boiler life. Minerals can build up in sections, reducing heat transfer, overheating cast iron, and causingsection failure.Clean system to remove sediment1. You must thoroughly flush the system (without boiler connected)to remove sediment. Sediment can affect chemical treatment of thesystem and can damage system components.2. For zoned systems, flush each zone separately through a purgevalve. (If purge valves and isolation valves are not already installed, install them to properly clean the system.)3. Flush system until water runs clean and you are sure piping is freeof sediment.Water chemistryUsing softened water — Softened water can be corrosive.Pay special attention to the inhibitor level, followingthe instructions in this manual and those suppliedwith the inhibitor.Water chemistry must be within the limits listed inthe following. If the water differs in any way, consulta water treatment company to set up a treatment programto control the system water within these limits atthe time of initial fill and throughout system operatinglife.Failure to maintain water chemistry as specified canresult in damage to the boiler and system components, resulting in potential for severe personal injury, deathor substantial property damage.Water pH: Minimum = 7.0 | Maximum = 8.51. Maintain boiler water pH between 7.0 and 8.5. Check with litmuspaper or have chemically analyzed by water treatment company.Hardness: Maximum = 6.0 grains per gallon1. The water hardness must comply with the maximum value above.High hardness will cause scale accumulation.Chlorine: Maximum 200 ppm1. Filling with chlorinated fresh water should be acceptable sincedrinking water chlorine levels are typically less than 5 ppm.2. Do not use the boiler to directly heat swimming pool or spawater.3. Do not fill boiler or operate with water containing chlorine inexcess of 200 ppm.Antifreeze1. Use only antifreeze listed by Weil-McLain as suitable for use withGV90+ boilers. A list of approved antifreeze products is availableat www.Weil-McLain.com.Part number 550-142-054/1211 59
