3: Maintenance requirementsOnce the construction has become established, the wicket is prepared for play by watering, close cutting and rolling to produce a very firmlevel surface.Natural grass cricket wickets require regular, routine maintenance to maintain playing qualityand restore grass cover and surface levelsfollowing play. Over time and due to the routinemaintenance programme implemented, moreintensive periodic remedial works may berequired. This may involve operations such as:• specialist aeration;• removal of the upper soil profile/turf andreplacement with fresh clay loam andreseeding; and• total reconstruction.Because of the high levels of wear which cricketwickets can experience, artificial wickets areoften laid alongside or within the natural grasscricket table to facilitate play in adverse weatherconditions and for practice purposes. In manyschools an artificial wicket may be the only formof match play facility.Planning for playing fields does not end with theirinstallation. To enjoy them as a resource and toensure that their use can be sustained for schoolsand the wider community, regular and thoroughmaintenance is required.
