Figure 4 continuedTotal playing field requirements for a school of 1,200 – not including community use.SGPs 1 This is because the same pitch can be used forcurricular and extra-curricular activity.Grass pitches 4 (rounded up This is a total figure (1.5 pitches for curricularfrom 3.2) use,1.7 for extra-curricular) as grass pitchescannot take the wear and tear of usage in thesame way as synthetic grass pitches. This figurerequires pitches to be well designed, constructedand maintained.Using the same assumptions, these figures can be factored up or down to calculate provisionfor schools of different sizes, as shown in the table below.Figure 5b: Secondary school playing fieldrequirements based on the worked example(55 minute periods).School roll SGP Grass pitch400 1 1500 1 2600 1 2700 1 2800 1 2900 1 3Figure 5a: Secondary school playing fieldrequirements based on the worked example(40 minute periods).School roll SGP Grass pitch400 1 1500 1 2600 1 2700 1 2800 1 2900 1 21000 1 31100 1 31200 1 41300 1 41400 1 41500 1 51600 2 41800 2 52000 2 5The results in the table left and in the previousworked example are based on the assumptionsdetailed at the beginning of this section. Aspreviously mentioned, you may choose toassume differently on certain criteria, whichmay result in a different outcome for thesecalculations: these serve only as a guide.Although in our worked example the minimumrecommendation for PE is achieved by a corePE allocation of three 40 minute periods perweek, this may be more difficult to achieve forschools operating with 55 minute lessons. Oneoption would be to rota one period of PE perweek with another subject so that PE would haveeither two or three periods on alternate weeks, giving an average in excess of the minimumtarget of two hours. This situation perhaps represents the most likelyway of meeting the target with period lengths of55 minutes. Figure 5b shows the impact thiswould have on playing field requirements basedon our worked example.1000 1 31100 1 41200 1 41300 1 51400 1 51500 2 41600 2 41800 2 52000 2 5School Playing Fields 22School Playing Fields 23
