Delivery of physicaleducation in schoolsis based on nationalcurricular guidanceproduced by the ScottishExecutive. A balancedprogramme requires theavailability, ideally on site,of a range of indoor <strong>and</strong>outdoor sports facilities.Section 2: Calculating provisionInterviews with school staff conducted during the production of this guidancereveal that, where appropriate <strong>and</strong> adequate playing fields are available,outdoor sport <strong>and</strong> physical activity typically occupies between 30% <strong>and</strong> 40%of PE curriculum time in primary <strong>and</strong> secondary schools.In addition to curricular use, a school’s playing fields will also have toaccommodate extra curricular <strong>and</strong> Active <strong>School</strong>s use, informal use by pupilsat breaks <strong>and</strong> lunchtime <strong>and</strong> perhaps also matches <strong>and</strong> training by schoolsports teams <strong>and</strong>/or local community sports clubs. The wide range of potentialuses of playing fields should be considered in assessing the number requiredfor each school.The type of sports pitches which school playing fields might be required toaccommodate will depend upon the requirements of these curricular <strong>and</strong>extra-curricular programmes. In secondary schools, pitches for football, rugby<strong>and</strong> hockey will all be required, as will space for a seasonal grass athleticstrack <strong>and</strong> field events. In some schools, cricket, shinty or tennis facilities mayalso be required. Hard surface areas should also be provided for informalbasketball <strong>and</strong> netball.In addition to these pitch <strong>and</strong> court-based sports, school grounds can also beused for other outdoor activities such as cycling <strong>and</strong> orienteering. The abovelist of sports should not be considered exhaustive <strong>and</strong> a school’s grass playingfields should ideally be provided as a single flexible area on which a wide rangeof activities can take place.<strong>School</strong> <strong>Playing</strong> <strong>Fields</strong> 13
