SPMMiniHigh Gain APDOverviewThe features and applications for the SPMMini detectors are summarizedbelow. Whether you are an OEM or a researcher, andyour application is a portable/miniature instrument, a large arearadiation detection application or a high tier laboratory analysisinstrument, the SPMMini will provide significant benefit over existingdetector platforms.FeaturesThe SPMMini is the first solid state alternative to the long establishedPhotomultiplier Tube (PMT). It combines the high gain (10 6 )and high quantum efficiency of the PMT with the well appreciatedbenefits of silicon including size, low operating voltage, robustness,reliability, magnetic field insensitivity, tolerance of excess/ambientlight, and suitability for miniaturization. In addition, the detector hashigh signal to noise and fast timing properties.The detector consists of an array of Geiger mode Avalanche Photodiodes(APDs), each individually coupled to integrated quenchelectronics, and is a type of detector commonly referred to as aSilicon Photomultiplier (SPM). The Geiger mode APD microcellshave extremely high internal amplification that allows single photonsensitivity at room temperature. The output of a Geiger modeAPD is an identical, fixed charge or current pulse for each singlephoton detected. By connecting the array of Geiger mode APDsin parallel, the summed output becomes proportional to the numberof Geiger mode pulses and hence proportional to the incidentphoton flux.The uniform high gain across the array allows the single photoelectronpeaks to be clearly resolved permitting both single photondetection and accurate calibration of the photon number. TheSPMMini includes transimpedance preamplification, a Peltiercooler driver circuit to enable cooling to –20°C and integratedpower supply as standard. A variety of add-on options to enhancefunctionality are provided, including C-mount (male) adapter and afiber coupler (adapter and fiber cable included).The detector die is mounted on a Peltier cooler and housed in ahermetically sealed TO8 can. During normal operation theSPMMini is cooled to –20°C. This allows even greater performanceover room temperature operation as the dark rate is reducedby over an order of magnitude. It is available with an activearea of 1mm circular diameter or 3x3mm 2 and with two detectorversions: Photon Detection Efficiency optimized or DynamicRange optimized.
